You can't be serious...that's so wrong. I mean really...

I hated SP2 - I installed it and it screwed my whole computer up - so after a system restore or two I got it working again.

it's not wrong. They let you wait long enough. Most likely your SP install failed due to spyware or 3rd party software incompat with sp2. Though I've yet to have a borked sp2 install going on 30 + pc's now.

I don't know about it still though....I work at a university where we have over 1000 comps we're in charge of and it was a MAJOR pain in the butt to install SP2 - it just caused a lot of problems. And I can tell you that all of our comps were not infected with a virus or anything - good ol' Deep Freeze...

There is nothing wrong with sp2 like Kodo mentioned before applying sp2 your computer must be clean otherwise you will probably want to pull your hair out if you have any :)
It was only at the start of it anyway that was causing major problems
how long did it take them to fix
    less then a week

I agree with Kodo too....when I did my upgrade I started with a clean install and everything went flawlessly, as did all the other computers I have worked on since SP2 was released.

I would imagine... when WU scans your PC for OS version.. if OS = XP RTM/SP1 then you wont be able to update unless OS = SP2, if OS isnt SP2 then you will not be allow access to updates.

Wonder if you will be still able to install stand alone updates via Download Center?

Microsoft warned some time ago that they were gonna do this. I don't think anyone believed them ;)

This will be a bit of a bummer to those like me, who aquired a pc with XP already installed to find that the XP on the pc is a copy, and therefore cannot update to SP2 but it will accept SP1

From having been on many spyware forums for a long time now i've read of many exploits which specifically target SP2 too.

Think Linux is gonna find its way onto this computer pretty soon.

Yes, because then the OS would be legal.

It only seems fair you dont get free updates on an illegal copy of an OS.

It seems even more fair when you are aware of it being illegal, yet continue to use it.

This is where we hit that weird area... patch or not to patch,

Only thing with not allowing illegal copies of XP being updated is the amount of unpatched machines that could cause the same type of havok that Blaster/Sasser did.

I know they are illegal copies of the os but not allowing say basic security updates can harm the legal users as well as we all know here how many legal users who dont update their OS on a regular basis.

You should have a legal copy I agree, however it isn't exactly hard to tap into it :D
Not that i would do it ofcourse :p
My theory is = if something is made there is always a way of undoing it and bypassing it if you really want to......
Anyway sp2 is not that much of a bigger deal it does address some issues but not quiet enough......
Why not put a kill switch or murder in the like unix did :D
Lets not even bother going into the detail.
Tell me who doesnt hate their stupid little processes and absurd questions that just repeat themselves when you're trying to do something
Are you sure you want to do this. NO Are you absolutely positive you want to do this? YES. NO i mean really are you sure haha useless!
No Mr I am the administrator of the particular pc so please give me the proper rights!
I want to be able to command my own machine, not everyone knows how to modify things around to get the most out of it....
Anyway ill stop right there
