So I used to use this keyboard on a different computer without the following problem; During post and O/S load the keyboard is unavailable! Using it on a rather old (but custom made PC) that I just can't part with :D

So my problem is that if (when) I need to be able to boot to a cd or go into the bios for whatever reason I simply do not have this option at the moment- I have tried using other ports (USB) to no avail.

This system is well maintained - using a full version of AVAST, with a subscription for proxy service, malwarebytes, & CCleaner religiously. Win XP Pro.
Yes I realize that I could swap the keyboard out- but really I have to try to find the resolution first!

    Anybody have any ideas?

Some usb keyboards just don't seem to work out of the OS environment (such as the BIOS environment). I've never been able to find a solution to this.

    Hi Meick,

Older MBs/BIOS do not have the ability to run USB devices. They will run after Windoze gets going if the MB has USB support and the USB drivers are loaded. I keep PS2 KBs and Mouses handy for those.

Hmm, I wonder if there is a BIOS update for the system that enables the user to use USB devices, Worth looking into.

    Greetings, Meick.

Does your motherboard have a PS2 connection? If so, you might try one of the USB/PS2 adapters (something like this or this). I've never used one of those that are cabled, but the single piece adapters that usually come with a USB mouse are pretty handy. Worth a shot.

And, to follow up on the BIOS angle, check if there are any 'Legacy USB' settings - if so, you might try toggling them.

Very good point! I'll into a firmware update (the system is about 7 yrs old.) And I have a PS2 to USB adapter I can try.

Thanks to all who replied :)
