Ever since yesterday i've been getting random lockups with my optical mouse (it's made by microsoft and it's about six years old, so returning to where i bought it is out of the question) i uninstalled the drivers xp puts on and plugged it into another usb port and let xp detect it (i did shutdown my maching before it unplugged my mouse).
does it look like i might need to buy a new mouse or could i have just a fincky usb port (i've had somthing simular to this with my previous computer (it would sometimes not detect my mouse).
sorry for the long winded question.

This is what i would be checking!

do you have the latest drivers installed?
turn the device over and clean the light emitting diode.
    If problem persists then....

If possible check your mouse on another system(to eliminate port connections as the problem)
If possible check another mouse on your system(to eliminate the device itelf as faulty)

    Regards.....

I've plugged it into another usb port and so far no problems and i recall having issues with the port i was using before so it might be just a picky usb port and i can't return my computer it's about 3 years old.

Yeh, fortunately they are (or used to be) one of the lesser expensive pieces of hardware!
Having said that, iv'e seen some of the prices they charge for advanced and gamers 'input' devices these days!

If USB causes you probs, maybe you could go back to PS/2 or even wireless?

    Happy shopping Hugh.....

Well i gave it another try and it worked for about 4 days and then it started to lockup again so until i can get another optical mouse i doomed to using an old ps2 ball mouse.

It's not wireless, It's a usb mouse, it's about 6 or 7 years old and it's held up pretty well considering i'm a gamer and i have been fairly ruff with it, lol :D.

I bought a new mouse (A microsoft comfort optical mouse 3000) and plugged it into the same usb port my old mouse was plugged into and had the same problems, so i plugged it into another usb port and so far no problems ( it has to the a bad port).
