My system is XP Pro, SP3. I installed Microsoft Security Essentials AV Tues. to run just once to check for malware. Yesterday I did a system restore and then tried to open MSE from my desktop shortcut and got the response no file found. I then tried to delete it in the add/remove section and got "can't find files" etc. I then tried to download the program again and got "program already installed". Task Mgr. shows MSMPENG.EXE which was running until I shut it down from Start Up.

How do I get rid of this?

    Hi

Could try one of two things or both,

    1. Run the Microsoft Cleanup Util HERE and look for MSE in the list and uninstall.
    2. Run Revo Uninstaller and do the same look for MSE and uninstall.

Then you could also run CCLeaner and its Cleaner and Registry tool (run the registry one until nothig is found)

Just maybe an old file still left after the Sys Restore preventing uninstall/reinstall.

Thanks David, but I guess this is a tough old bugger. I deleted M/S Security Client from M/S Clean Up (no MSE) and tried deleting MSE via Revo but got the same "file not found" response. With CCleaner, there were 2 MSE files there which I deleted, but no luck.

    Any other suggestions?

BTW, do you see any problems with the deletion of M/S Security Client? I thought this was or contained MSE.

    Hi

Yes it should be but you could end up with some files being orphaned which if an installer for MSE when you try and re-install sees it with fail the install as it thinks its already installed.

I will direct you to this post HERE from Stephen Boots a fellow Microsoft MVP but a specialist in security apps and MSE in particular and try his post info for removal.

Thanks to all for the tips. M/S Fix It did just that.

Regarding my other question, I deleted M/S Security Client from M/S Clean Up while attempting removal of MSE. Is this something I need? I do have Forum recommended Malware programs installed.

    Hi

Good stuff on it now fully removed.

MS Security Client is part of MSE and if you install MSE again it will be installed back, if you have an Antivirus application from the forum recomemended list then you dont need MSE, unless MSE is your AV.

What security applications did you install from the forum recomended list?

I have installed Comodo firewall and AV, Malwarebytes Anti-malware, Spybot Search and Destroy, SuperAntiSpyware, and Spyware Blaster. These are all the free editions and I'm quite happy with them. Jud :)

Good stuff a nice list (I'd not have SPybots TeaTimer installed but thats me) and thats all that counts, if you are happy with them, thats perfect, no one set fits all.
