Microsoft state I may have a longstanding hijackware infection [windows update fails]

    Hi there,

    Keep getting Windows Update errors:

If I try to install IE9, it fails, with the error: Code 9C48: Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

If I try to install IE10 instead, it also fails, with the error: Code 9C59: Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

Went on the MS forums and after some diagnosis, they stated that I may have a longstanding hijackware infection and that a reinstall is the only option.

Thought that I would rather post somewhere I trust like here first to see if this really is the case.

I have run through the readme first and performed the preliminary scans for my system.

    Logs are attached.

Any indications as to whether I am infected or not greatly appreciated.

    Regards.

I am not finding any malware in your logs. I suggest you post in the software forum, but first, let's do this:

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.

    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup

    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.

    Hi there.

    Many thanks for the help.

I performed the steps you stated and the checks were done and the computer restarted, but the symptoms are the same following reboot.

Are there any further logs that I can post, or is it off to the other forum as per your previous comment?

Whilst I also don't believe that there is any infection, I believe that there is some Windows issue there and would not be surprised if the resolution turns out to be an install from scratch...

    Thanks once again.

    You are most welcome.

Since you are not having any malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 4 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link

Malware removal from a National Chain = $149
Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0

    Hello there,

Apologies for not replying to this sooner.

I did the cleanup activities that you mentioned, thank you so very, very much !

Instead of then posting in the other forum, who I have no doubt could have resolved the issue one way or another, I decided to backup all the data and then format the drive and reinstall Windows properly, as I believe HP or the store had not deployed it correctly.

Lo and behold, after the reinstall, the OS performs a lot better and Windows Update is working fine.

I then restored all the data and installed all the apps again. During this, another set of Windows Updates were posted by Microsoft and these were installed hassle free.

Just wanted to thank you again for confirming what I suspected, that the P.C. wasn't infected and it was just a Windows problem somewhere.

Glad it's all sorted, and a fresh Windows install has so many benefits if one can be bothered to do it.

    :-D
