I have a 5 year old Surface Pro runnning windows 10. I rarely use it and it has always run perfectly. Recently I used Driver Booster to scan/update my drivers. Now my Surface will not boot up, I get the BSOD. I have tried all reset and troubleshooting options with no success. It asks for my bitlocker recovery key, but I don't have it. Is it time to pitch this machine in the recycling bin? Or does anyone have any other ideas? Many thanks.

When you were running Driver Booster did it ask you if you wanted to create a system restore point?. Did you click ok on that? Don't remember? Chances are you have a restore point from that moment before BSOD.

When booting, this time, hit f8, f11, which ever it may be... you may have to play around with it until you see image I attached to this post

    1. On the “Choose an Option” screen select Troubleshoot.
    2. Select Advanced options.
    3. Click on System Restore.
    4. After your computer reboots, select your account and sign-in.
    5. Click Next.
    6. Usually, system restore points are automatically created when you install a new update, driver or app. You can also create a system restore point manually. Select the restore point created before the blue screen appeared.
    7. Click Next.
    8. Click Finish and apply the restore point.

Thanks for these tips. Driver Booster did not ask for a restore point. As far as f8, f11 on bootup, I can't do that because I don't have a keyboard on my surface, and when I power up, I immediately get the BSOD. I have tried all Troubleshoot options, multiple times, and no luck. I wish I had saved the bitlocker key! Many thanks for taking the time to try and help!!

It should have a USB port. Get a USB keyboard and plug that in.

It does not have a usb port. But it does have a micro sd card port. I'm guessing it could be possible to create a boot file on the sd card? I discovered on youtube that if I hold the power button and volume up button at the same time, I enter a UEFI menu, which seems to give me a chance to tell the machine how to boot up. But I am stretching my very basic tech knowledge as far as 1/creating a boot file on the micro sd card, and 2/configuring the machine boot sequence using the UEFI menu. Plus, I'm not even sure that approach makes any sense. Lol. I think I need to put this machine into storage for a while, until I run across someone who can figure it out. I am living abroad, so the Geek Squad is not an option. LOL. Thanks all for trying to help!

Thanks to all of you for sticking with me on this issue. I just realized I do have a USB port....but its the small usb port, not the big one I have been used to....usb c instead of usb a (i think).....just another sign of my weak tech knowledge. So I now have an adaptor dongle (usb c to usb a). SO......should I try to connect a keyboard and try the F keys, as suggested in an earlier post? Or should I try to download a Surface recovery file and try to load that to my Surface? Or something else? Thanks again everyone.

I know this is too late for you tomg, but for others that read this post. I advise if you do not have a specific reason to update drivers, dont. If it is not broke, dont fix it. Same with the Bios. Also, I do not recommend geek squad either. They are kids that just stick in a disk/usb drive with a bunch of fix all programs on it. Most dont have a clue. I have repaired countless PC's that they could not. Find a real PC tech in your area.

Tomg, I have not looked very well at all, but if you want a starting point on repairing your surface, try here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...-surface-677852e2-ed34-45cb-40ef-398fc7d62c07
