microsoft.windows.redirectedhosts

    I loaded 4 entries into my HOSTS file yesterday. Run Spybot S&D, it reported microsoft.windows.redirectedhosts errors. AFAIK these HOSTS references are OK. How can I tell Spybot that these entries are OK, AFAIK.

    Is this a "feature" of Spybot? I tried their Help section but it would not contact home.

    This is normal behavior when you redirect something. It is just pointing out to you something that you need to look out. Why do you want to redirect something that does not need to be redirected?

    You can disable RedirectedHosts by going into Advanced Mode, Ignore Products and on the SecurityC.sbi tab put a check on the Microsoft.Windows.RedirectedHosts line. But note if you do this and malware adds similar lines, you will never be told about them.

    I have read that adding known vailid IP addresses to your HOSTS file speeds up the lookup. Is this correct? Bazza

    I'm not sure about this, but I tend to doubt you would notice much of a difference in most cases. And large host files can actually slow things down unless you make special configuration changes to avoid the problem.

    I'll try and research it further. In theory it should work.:-D Might only gain milliseconds. ;) If you put the valid ones at the front of a (big) HOSTS file it might also find them a bit quicker. ;)
