When I bring up older document ie: letters, Word changes the original date to the current date. If not for saving it with original date it would be lost. I think :confused
How do I keep it from doing that. It doesn't always ask if I want to keep changes. I have Word created 2002, modified @ current date when I check properties.

Insert Menu > Date and Time, check to see if “Update Automatically” is checked, if so uncheck, click OK.

I couldn't tell by the thread. Did Cat's solution work for you?

I wanted to try the link's before I posted, but don't have Word on this machine.

I will try the steps on Word in the morning, so I can tell exactly what it does. Sorry, wish I could be of more help.

If you use a template (stationary) to make your letters the field will update unless you select the Create Date.

The links provided by Steve tell you how to edit the date in the template so they store the create date instead of the current open date.

Also, if you highlight the incorrect date in the letter then click insert, field, CreateDate, it will put the correct date in. (the create date)

Hope that helps, I'm not the best at giving instructions. There is also a setting in print re date too, but since your not printing them..don't think it applies.

Your instructions are fine, it's me trying to mentally process them. I discovered it is documents made with the letter template, all with word alone does not change. I made a test doc using createdate and it is holding there.
Thank You both so much for your help. :):)
