every time i go to run word the installer runs for about 5 minutes and eventually word will open. it was asking for proplus.msi which is on the cd which i dont have, so i downloaded it and directed the installer to it when it asked, why does it need to install every time its run and how can i fix it? powerpoint works just fine, and i dont use any other office programs.

edit: when i run word with the command prompt it tells me theres a problem locating a file to display the tip of the day

i moved the file normal.dot to a different directory and now only sometimes does word open the installer when i run it. when it works well, the installer window quickly flashes and when i close it it will flash again, but then sometimes it does the exact same thing it was doing before.

windows installer also starts when i run registry mechanic, and then starts again when i try to do a scan.

theres no error message, simply windows installer popping up saying preparing to install. the message never changes but after a few minutes the box closes and the program opens.

Check Event Viewer, application log for errors, specifically with the source of windows installer.

Both of those errors are Office related. You'd be surprised how many other places it can pop up, and not be apparent how it is related. Point in case, if the broken item is a startup item, like, say, for example, ctfmon, it will show up all over the place.

methods 2 and 3 arent applicable for me, and method one doesnt work. i can run powerpoint just fine, nothing comes up, the only programs on my computer that ive found are doing this are word and registry mechanic.

Without the CDs then, I would say you are out of options. Method 3 will probably work, if you can apply those settings, whether it seems applicable or not. Obviously if you have XP Home, it probably isn't gonna happen.

i have xp pro and i am the only user, as such i am the administrator, but it seems to me that all method 3 does it make windows installer ask for the disc when you dont have admin privileges.

thanks for trying so hard though, i appreciate it.
