    Hi all

Think my ie6 browser might have been hijacked .

Cant get to some sites i have always used... or connect to msn hotmail account at all .
My other pc upstairs is fine so i know the sites are working ok .

It seems very random as to what i can onto on the web but seems to be password ones...NOT ALL just some .

I am very security minded and have an external router with a built in firewall .......zone alarm pro .....Tracks eraser pro /adaware6 and spysweeper used every couple of days ......plus wcafee security centre with firewall (works ok with zone alarm at same time ) antivirus and spamfilter .

This has served me well for a good few years.

It seemed to start last night when i was on a chat site and my comp completly froze and after reboot windows said it was repairing a damaged file .
Anyway done all the ussual check setting"s and emtying the ie cache but still probs .

Done a virus scan inwhich one file was found and repaired and also run all the adaware stuff but no luck .

Like i said it seems to be sites i need password for its coming up page cant be displayed .

I have run hyjack this and posted the results below but dont want to delete anything i might need so wondered if anyone could give me advice first .

    Kind regards
    coll .

Also i have checked my browser settings and they seem to be the same as the ones on my other pc so dont think its that .
    RESULTS FROM HYJACK THIS .

    Welcome to MG's coll!

First you should read this link: http://www.majorgeeks.com/vb/showthread.php?t=26149
But here are few items that need to be cleaned up:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00A6FAF1-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - (no file)

Did you install Advanced Search Bar? If not, uninstall it if possible and delete the 2 following if they do not go away with uninstall:
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {09F0F280-FB9A-481B-B69A-CB00DC44D027} - C:\PROGRA~1\ADVANC~1\POPUPJ~1.DLL

    Also delete these:
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {5FBB4D41-2A8A-4224-9E4F-49C6E129E8A9} - (no file)

    Thankyou for the reply .:)

    Here"s an update .

Deleted the files i was adviced to above but still no joy .

I have noticed the following .

eBAY lets me log into my account no probs .
eBAY message board WONT (comes up page cant be displayed )
MSN wont let me log in at all .
Paypal lets me go to the paypal site but WONT let me log in to my account (comes up page cant be displayed )
My bank site lets me go to the website but WONT let me log into my account (comes up page cant be displayed )

Other sites where i need a password appear ok (including ) Majorgeeks (thank god ) so this has me totally baffled .
I was thinking my accounts might have been hijacked but surely the login pages should at least come up even if someone had managed to hack me .

This is driving me MAD .

    Any ideas ???

    Regards coll .

Have you installed, UPDATED, and run Ad-aware and SpotBot Search & Destroy? And then cleanup what they find. If so repost a HiJack This log. If not, do that first and then repost HiJack This log.

Well after trauling all over the net to see lots of forums with
people with the same problem and no definative answer i visited
the site i have posted below .I printed the insructions off and one
by one went through them .
It turned out to be the one i least expected !!!
I had to re-register 9 .Dll files one by one and was amazed when
    this worked .
How could these have changed or been removed (i am not sure)
Any way hope its ok to give this link as it might help others in the
    same situation

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;813444

Thanks for the people who took the time to welcome me to
the forum and answer my question

This is what sorted me out ______________

    Register .Dll Files

    Re-register the following .dll files:
    Softpub.dll
    Wintrust.dll
    Initpki.dll
    Dssenh.dll
    Rsaenh.dll
    Gpkcsp.dll
    Sccbase.dll
    Slbcsp.dll
    Cryptdlg.dll

    To do so:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
    3. At the command prompt, type the following lines and press ENTER after each line: regsvr32 softpub.dll
      regsvr32 wintrust.dll
      regsvr32 initpki.dll
      regsvr32 dssenh.dll
      regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
      regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
      regsvr32 sccbase.dll
      regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
      regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
    4. Click OK when you receive the message that DllRegisterServer in FileName succeeded.
    5. Type exit to quit Command Prompt.
    Bye 4 now

I'm glad you found a solution, but you still have one baddie remaining on your system and it needs to be removed.

Run HijackThis and place a check mark next to the item listed below, and
ONLY that item. Then, WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, select “Fix checked” and allow HijackThis to fix the following:

I'm not sure that SmileyCentral is really a problem. See this link on MG:

    Coll,

Way back at the start of this thread you said, "Done a virus scan inwhich one file was found and repaired". What was the virus name that was found and cleaned? Perhaps it was the root of your major problem. But there were a few other things we cleaned along the way from you HiJack This logs. Happy to see things are looking better.

I cant remember the name of the virus .
I am using McAfee Security Centre ......so s there a way i can
find out so i can post it on here .
Is it possible that the virus changed my .dll settings ??

McAfee typically stores information in a log file. I'm not sure what it would be called for the version you are running but they typically had a file like:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Network Associates\On Demand Scanner\Scan32\VSCLog.TXT

You'll have to check your version to see where the path to your log file is.

Yes, it is possible that the virus caused problems with your .dll files.

    Coll,

All I can say is you are a legend. I had the exact same problem, and now it is fixed. Although I went straight to restoring the dll files, and that didn't do it by itself. But I started working through the microsoft link you posted and tried it after that and it worked.

    Thanks again,

    Jeff.
