    i have had a few probs a few months ago and have left things as we were due to move house and i had access to another PC, but here goes;

i have an e-machines 2210 PC, 2.60GHz Celeron Proc, 40G HardDr, 128DDR, 56k Fax modem, 10/100Mbps Ethernet (so it says) that was working fine on the broadband connection at the old house, ISP is BT (I'm in in UK) at both houses, then went off about a month before we moved.
for some reason, the internet connection just won't go on. have spoke to a friend who has some idea about computers and said i should remove all the norton AV files as the PC was running very slowly before, which i thought i had done at the time, but the firewall stayed on, so used the removal tool which i have just done. (norton was supplied as part of the broadband package). nothing has changed- the message comes up "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. most likely causes- not connected to internet/ website is encountering problems/ there might be a typing error in the address. what you can try- Diagnose Connection Problems/ More information".
Diagnose Connection Problems pops up 'Network diagnostic for Windows XP- ... encountered a problem and needs to close'. error sig is xpnetdiag.exe, appver 5.1.2600.3012, modname xpnetdiag.exe. modver 5.1.2600.3012. offset 00000003.
the cables are all in place, checked twice. general connection is ok as this laptop works on the same router. any ideas, feel free to tell me i'm being a true dafty! :confused
    thanks

    Hi pkpk,
This sounds like a problem with your ISP connection. Have you spoken with your broadband provider about it? If you're not having any malware symptoms, you will get the best help with internet connection questions in the networking forum. Also, have you spoken with your broadband provider to see what they have to say? If you think the slowness of your computer could be due to malware, you could run Spybot and AVG Antispyware and see if they pick up anything. See the following link and look for these two pieces of software. Spybot is on the first page, AVG on the page which is specific to your WINDOWS XP CLEANING PROCEDURE
If you chose to run these, please attach the AVG log to your next post.

Hi abri, thanks for the response-
am currently scanning with AVG anti-spyware, and have a few others to do too. as i am not doing the AVG scan on this computer and the other can't get online, how do i get the AVG logs across? can they be saved as doc files or something?
not spoken to the broadband provider as i thought if this laptop works on either cable or wireless, then there shouldn't be anything wrong with the broadband itself, but the PC itself, or am i wrong?
will be back with AVG logs one way or another :)

    Hi pkpk!

The scan will have a name that looks similar to this:
    Code:
    Report-Scan-20071216-044733.txt
It's a .txt file and can be transferred easily with a flash drive, cd or even a diskette.

If you talk about two computers, please distinguish them as in working computer and broken computer or something like this.

If you have a broken modem, this could still be an issue to discuss with your provider as they might replace it.
The slowness of your computer may be a separate issue from the problem of the connection.
