I recently bought a Mini DV(a digital camcorder). It is a JVC GR-D244U. Today, I recieved a Firewire card for my computer, and a DV cable(that connects my camera to the Firewire port on my computer). It came with some software, VideoStudio 7 SE Basic. I haven't got any clue at all how to go about transferring my video to my computer, can anyone help?

using that program, or any video program such as Windows Movie Maker, you are looking for a "Capture Video From Device" function.

once you find that, you can choose which format to capture in.
WMV (Windows Media Video) is good for simple videos that you just want to put on your computer. It has a pretty high native compression, so the file size is relatively small.

if you are going to do any editing or want better quality, use Uncompressed AVI capture. The file will be quite a bit larger, but better quality and better for editing. You can always encode the AVI into DivX or XviD after it is done/edited.

Thanks! I've got it up and running now, this is really cool. How would I encode a video to DivX after I'm done editing it?(And can that type of file be put on a DVD?)

if your plans are to put it onto DVD, its best to leave it as an uncompressed AVI or MPEG format. Then you can use a DVD authoring program like Nero Vision Express and it will convert it to the necessary DVD format.

DivX encoding is more used for storage on the computer or burning onto a CD, and certain Divx capable DVD players will play those discs (but the quality is not as good as DVD).

the Editing program you use should have different encoding options once you are done with the video.
