    Hello Everyone,

Through major research online and much frustration I thought I would come here to ask one simple question and if it is confirmed I will also need assistance on how to fix it. I think my computer is reading 2 serparate registries or something. In my directory it shows things being downloaded to C: and also C:Docments and Settings Is this possible and if so how can I fix it. My computer is windows xp home edition and was reformatted a few months ago by apparently someone who should have known what they were doing. My desktop background shows up sometimes and other times I can't get anything. Please help!!!! :confused

Have you tried running a disk scan? I open My Computer, right-click the drive, choose Properties, click the Tools tab, click Check Now...
I have had problems with a directory being accessible from two different parent directories before, but this scan usually fixes it.
If it keeps happening, but this scan says the drive is fine, it may be a registry problem. What program are you using to download the files? The Desktop background may not show for several reasons. I'll try to find a link about that to post later. It can be registry issues, low memory, or some software blocking it, among other things.

Well I tried doing what you suggested Sergeant and I still have the same problem. Something else I noticed was when I ran my antivirus program yesterday (Shaw Secure) the amount of items it checked was was only just over 25,ooo and I know that it use to be wayyyy more than that. It also looked like it chose to check the NT part only and I had to choose "C" and never had to do that before. It almost sounds like the registry may have been manipulated somehow. It is unfortunate that all the registry fix programs cost money because I am on disability and can not afford to buy them and somehow I know that it has to be a registry problem

There are registry cleaners for free download here, but I'm not sure they will help you. You also might want to try posting in the Software forum, as they are more used to handling Windows issues related to reformatting/reinstalling.

If there are registry issues, Glary Utilities, and/or Ccleaner will help.

What are you system specs? How many HD's do you have?
Have you went into your Bios and looked around for anything strange?
My desktop use to not show sometimes, and there are numerous reasons why it would'nt show. Next time your desktop doens't show up. Check to see if it is listed on your processes. Are you sure your system is clean of Virus/spyware/malware? If is the least bit uncertain,
Try this, http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 Follow directions exactly as written.
then post you logs for one of the experts to deem you clean, then we'll go from there.

Drive was "reformatted" a couple of months ago?
Did this problem develop at about the same time?
Sounds almost like your helper has installed Windows over top of Windows.
Do you ever see any questions about which version or account to open?
