I got the missing config message after a power outage. I went through the process of rewriting the 5 registry entries from repair procedure. XP boots now. Some software works and some doesn't. The "my documents" have been cleared. The XP registration has been undone. The repair files that I substituted must have been from the original install 11 years ago.
Can I add back some of the software, default, sam, security, or system entries from the .bak files in tmp. Will this get me back some of the missing files?
I have the entire hard drive backed up as a .tib file. pre crash on an external drive in case of a disaster.
Can I get the original config/sys files from the .tib and overwrite the ancient ones.

You can certainly do that, but why not restore the entire Acronis backup? This will also restore your documents, and most likely get your non-working applications back.

I guess my reasoning was that everything was ok until I changed the config files. I don't know what is in those 5 files. They must contain everything that is missing. and it only took 2 or 3 minutes to do instead of a full restore.
Can I restore from the .tib on the external drive or do I just rewrite the internal. I never done a full restore from a backup.

The reason your computer has problems is because the repair subfolder is created when Windows is first installed and does not contain the current registry hives. The Acronis backup will only work if you did a system image backup. If it was a system backup then you would do a restore from the external drive. But you will probably have to use your Acronis Bootable Disc as Acronis will not launch because you do not have a current registry.

There a two ways to bring back the registry and will work if you have valid System Restore Points.

    First way:
Download 30 day demo of ERD 2007 from this site. I believe it will only install on a XP computer but you can try. When When this MSDaRT50Eval.msi is installed it creates an ISO image – erd50.iso – which is located at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset\erd50.iso. Burn the iso with Imgburn or other burning software that can burn a bootable iso image. Then boot the CD and do a System Restore. It is listed under Start>System Tools. When finished, and you cannot start some programs, see if you can do a normal System Restore to a point before the corruption.

The Second way: If you have restore points in your backup that you can browse to in the System Volume Information Folder on your external drive, then you can also use those.

I don't actually own acronis. I believe the .tib file was created as a complete image backup via seatools disc wizard when I upgraded my hard drive a few weeks ago. I migrated the data to the new drive then created a complete backup onto my external drive.
Seatools is one of the program that wont load so I'm downloading a new copy. I attempted a normal system restore on bootup. The restore point was prior to the crash however it still starts up with the old startup files.
