    CD/DVD drives "missing" ?
    From PCUtilities mag, #127, p78
Also "card drive" missing" in Windows Explorer ?

    Solution (in Windows Explorer)

    • Click on Organize
    • Folder and Search Options
    • View
    • Untick "Hide Empty Drives in the Computer Folder"
    • Click on "Apply" and
    • OK and Exit.

My note: Works on my W7 laptop
Hope it works for you, too. ;)

To clarify, what IS your "D drive"? A hard drive/partition? A CD/DVD drive? A memory card reader slot? Or what?

Reports have filtered in that CD or DVD drives will suddenly cease to exist in XP systems. Most often this has been reported in conjunction with program installations and Windows upgrades, but it has also happened for no apparent reason. This tweak will restore the missing drives after a reboot.

It is a typical CD/DVD drive on my desktop. I guess it is a hard drive/partition. The OS is Win 7

Alright, if it's a CD/DVD drive, let's rule out the obvious. Are there any question marks or exclamation points in your Device Manager? (Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Device Manager -under Devices and Printers-)

Also, can you see the drive under Disk Management? (Click Start, type Computer Management in the search box, click the top link, then click Disk Management on the left under Storage... scroll through the drives listed on the right pane)

Device manager shows a yellow ! When I highlight the disc drive and click properties it says- This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Computer management does not show it.

reinstall the drivers that should be the quick fix, if reinstalling the drivers does not work.

Or open it up, unplug the rom and try to plug it into a new port, if neither works,

BUY A NEW ROM, they are like 15 dollars.

I really think its the drivers

Thanks for the idea. I tried what you suggested to no avail. The ROM is an internal cd drive. Any thoughts?

open comp up, find the ports that goes into, switch the lines that feed into the rom with different lines and see if that boots.

its like putting in a usb device into a different usb, your mobo should react to the rom differently.

If that does not work, your rom is done, buy a new one

Thanks for the idea, but this is an internal drive. This is a desk top computer. The cd drive is built in. Any other thoughts?

Yeah... you have to open the desktop computer CASE, and follow the above directions.
