I'm guessing that those arent gonna run on 98, if i remember correctly.

avg v. 8.5 doesn't work in 98, and neither does avira.

I think AVG 7.5 worked in 98 and ME, but i'm not sure if you can still use that program, and get current updates.

Thank you very very much for the info...I'm a bit paranoid and run Avira, AVG AND Avast on my laptop but it's running Windows Vista...on the old machine running 98...Avast was the only one I hadn't tried...I will go do so...thank you so much again!

whoa, u only need one anti virus program running at one time, and all 3 of those running at once is too much.

You can also install the old version of Zone Alarm 4.5.594 on windows 98. It is a good two way firewall.
All the old versions are here

I help senior citizens who don't have the newest computers nor the most up to date OS but the computer still works for the little they want to use it for so I try and keep them as safe as possible.

thesmokingun...Why is running those three antiviruses to much other than I imagine it's seriously redundant?

and yes, plodr...my parents are senior citizens and feel that for the little they use their computer (not at all right now because they don't know how...which is what I'm going to try help them with) they don't need to have anything newer or better. I think they are going to get frustrated with the slowness of the 56k dial up modem tho...but will help if I can...thank you very much for your help.

it is seriously redundant, but the fact is, they are real time antivirus scanners, and therefore all 3 are running at all times. it may not seem that obvious on a better computer, but it will slow down older computers. I would imagine that if you ever did have an infected file, there would be problems when trying to remove it. However, if you feel that they are working ok with eachother, then go right ahead and leave it alone :) . It just seems to me, that according to recent tests involving free antivirus programs, they all offer pretty much the same level of protection, so 1 program is not really so much better than the other. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=199261
