I recently bought a new camera (canon) and when I tried to install the software there appeared to be no setup.exe file on the disc. There are other files but I noticed that the icons were just plain and I when right click the files no menu pops up. I put the disk in another computer and there is a setup.exe file in the root directory. I thought something went wrong with the DVD-Rom so I bought a replacement and it does the same thing. Whenever I put any software installation disc in the drive no exe. files are visable and the icons are just plain. I can rip and burn DVD's and CD's and picture disks work fine. Do I have some kind of a virus or is there a setting in Windows XP thats causing this. I have administative right's but don't no where to begin. Has anyone seen this before?

I realize it would be good to figure out a solution to the issue of executables not appearing in Explorer, but if you use Start/Run and type the "D:\Setup.exe" (assuming D: is your DVD drive) does the software install launch? Another thing to try would be to open a command prompt and type...

    dir d:\*.exe

...and see if the executables are listed. That would tell you if it's just Explorer that's having the problem.

When I put the disc in another computer there are 4 folders and two files one being the setup.exe file. When I open it with widow explorer on the main computer there are two folders and two files all with diferent names then they realy are. The two folders can be opened but the two files can not. If I open comand prompt and change to the drive and do a dir there are only to folders and no files both folders have the same wrong name as in windows explorer. All my other drives work fine and this drive does everything else it's supposed to do. This is a replacment drive so it's not the hardware.

Try disabling your antivirus, and firewall, then installing.

Problem Solved! I have a program for My Ipod called XPlay3 that allows me to use my Ipod under Windows XP. The disk I'm having problems with has both windows and Mac software and Xplay3 is opening the Mac part of the disk. If I remove Xplay everything is fine.
