    Silence is not golden.
Hello, thanks for reading this. I am new here, tried to post this before, but I don't think it registered. (I can't find it anyway) So if it's here twice, I apologise.

My dad's windows 98 "tiny" machine has no sound. There was a strange file in control panel - had an icon but no filename: I clicked on it, but it wouldn't open. It must have been a corrupted mmsys.cpl - the multimedia applet. I deleted the mmsys.cpl file from windows\system & the strange file vanished from control panel, as did another one (sounds perhaps?) & hoped it would find another copy somehere, but it can't find one. I don't have the real win98 disc, it's a "tiny" system restore recovery disc. Can I download the mmsys.cpl (for win98) from somewhere? (Actually my mmsys.cpl is in recyclebin, but I'm fairly sure it's corrupted.)
I went to windows setup & uninstalled multimedia, & then re-installed it. I removed sound card in device manager & reinstalled. It says it's working properly. But the multimedia programme in control panel still won't open.

It was working, & dad doesn't use it much. I use it every 3 months or so to check email & a few things, but I can't think of any changes of late. I just downloaded updates for win98 from microsoft but it hasn't cured the problem. Any suggestions welcome.

Right, I've just tried: (as in Bo's win 98 tips)

    extract /a <cabinet> <filename> /l <destination>

& found out that the mmsys.cpl file is in win98_25.cab in windows\options\cabs

Deleted the old file again, installed this one, but still problem persists
    Error message:

    error loading mmsys.cpl
A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed

    ...

    Still no sound

I used a programme called PowerQuest Second Chance that my dad's PC has; it claims to "take you back to where you want to be", but it doesn't really transport you anywhere, just the computer configuration settings. Unfortunately it only seems to go back to June of this year, I tried that & not much has changed. Except that the two strangely behaving icons are back in Control Panel.

If I can't find any easier solutions, perhaps I may try to reinstall windows 98 again, but I'd rather not, it might not work at all & then we'd be even worse off. (Or perhaps better off, he might decide to splash out on a new PC!)

Yesterday evening I thought I'd blown it when I tried using a dos version of PowerQuest second chance my dad has on a 3½ floppy. It froze the computer, then when I tried to boot up it kept going into that programme & getting stuck, even without the floppy in. Fortunately I'd had a bit of experience using MS-Dos on an old pre-windows 286, & I managed to find "edit" & rem the offending line that had somehow been written to the autoexec.bat file. I was racking my brains trying to remember commands like dir, cd, type, edit, and the /s ... I bet most of you don't know what I'm talking about. Mind you, if you really are geeks, you will...
However at least the PC works, it can email, but it ought to have sound & doesn't.
If you have been, thank you for listening. A solution would be even more deserving of thanks!
