Missing or corrupt vgaoem.fon

    When I go into the Recovery Console and type the following: expand d:\i386\vgaoem.fo_ c:\windows\system, the response I get is "Access is denied." Very unsporting. Any ideas?? I'm not getting the option to repair this installation, it acts as if the C:\drive is unformatted. I'm trying to recover data from the hard drive for an elderly gentleman who doesn't want to lose his pictures, etc., and as they say, no good deed goes unpunished. Appreciate any direction at all at this point.

    probably not exactly what your looking for - but why don't you stick the hard drive in a secondary computer as a slave, copy all the stuff he doesn't want to lose - then just format the drive and install his copy of windows again?

    This assumes that you have the CD for the OS that is installed in the CD drive and the CD drive is D:\ . Are those two conditions met? It could be the D:\ might be the labeling of the recovery partition also.

    If you explore the CD is there a vgaoem file in the i386 folder?

    Have you looked through C:? There quite possibly might be an i386 folder in C:\ since modern computers don't come with CDs.

    It might also help if you mentioned a) make and model of computer (so we can see what sort of recovery options exist) b ) version of windows running c) the problem so we can determine exactly what you are trying to fix.

    I have a Dell 2002 desktop computer that had been in storage for several years. I wanted to boot it up and retrieve picture files to store on external hard storage drive. The computer will not start windows and gives this message. \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\vgaoem.fon. Then it says to use a start up disk, but I no longer have that. Any suggestions?
