ok... im very good w/computers but my graphic card knowledge is poor. need some help.

    Stats:
    Windows Vista Home Premius SP2
Model: HP Pavilion dv5 Notebook PC
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6400 @ 2.00GHz
    RAM: 4.00 GB
    System: 64-bit

Earlier today my monitor started flickering BADLY! I thought I was about to lose my monitor all together. I quickly went into DISPLAY SETTINGS and put all setting back to the factory default. Before the operation could complete the screen went black! I waited to see if it would come back on but it didnt. I shut down my laptop hard and rebooted.

After I was back up i went into DISPLAY SETTINGS & PROPERTIES (screen shot enclosed) and there is nothing!

    Adapters: UNAVAILABLE (screen shot)
    --- PROPERTIES: (screen shot)
    ---Default Monitor: (screen shot)

    Device Manager (list as follows)
    - Display Adapters
    -- ! Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
-- ! Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family (screen shots)

    Drive Update: Failed
(tried to update from the properties screen. then downloaded the drivers from the MS Vista web site. Both failed)

    Rollback Driver: Unavailable
The "check for solutions" button offered a "quick fix" which failed ... something about aero not being compatible (scratches head)

    DirectX (screen shots)

    Questions:
    1. Is the problem with my drivers or did my graphic card fail (die).
    2. If its the graphic card is it going to be difficult and/or expensive to replace?

    Greetings, LadyYepperz.

The fact that you're able to navigate at all indicates that this is not a hardware issue. Those screenshots are pretty clear, with no artefacts or corruption, so this is most likely a driver problem.

I tried to look up the software for your machine at the HP site, but there are myriad listings for 'Pavilion DV5' - what is the exact model #?
