i was recently told by someone that buying motherboard bundles are definitely a no no and that you should buy the bits seperately. is this true? because i've been to novatech.co.uk and found a bundle i like and also selected the bits independantly to see what would be cheaper and surprisingly, the bundle was cheaper and they fit the processor for you! so what is better, bundles or individual parts (mobo, processor, heatsink & fan and memory) ????

TBH ... mcadam I dont see why bundles are not a good choice!

If the mobo has the options you want, the CPU and Memory are the speeds your after then thats the way to go IMHO. Plus if its cheaper then bonus, the reason it maybe cheaper is that the CPU will most likely be an OEM one rather than a retail boxed one.. as I notice they are putting their own brand of HS&F on in lieu of the ones that come in retail boxes, thats not a problem if they can guarentee that the one they supply is good upto the cooling specs of the CPU.

post which one your looking at and the guys/girls will give you some input?

thanks for your help halo, this is the one i'm considering buying as my budget is quite low!

i was only going with intel because they seem faster but many people have recommended me athlon. this bundle comes with 512mb ram and the athlons within my price range are only 256mb ram!!!!

I have been looking at mobo's and cpu's too. Think I have made up my mind.

    this mobo:

    and this cpu:

Still trying to get more input about those from experienced builders here before i order them.

A prebuilt bundle would be ideal for me also since this is my first build and I dont really know what Im doing. Unfortunately, I have heard ppl say that it may be a bad idea, and I havent been able to find a bundle I like anyways.

I looked at your bundle there and to me it seems like getting 2X 256mb Ram sticks might make it cost more to upgrade later.(Didnt seem like they give enough info about the mobo either. Gotta work within your budget though. good luck.

The processor speed above 2.0 GHz will only really matter if your into gaming. If you don't play games, then don't waste your money on a 3.0 or higher, get a 2.53 or something. I personally don't game and have a 2.53 and have never gotten to a point of losing speed. And I have had 4-5 IE windows open, excel and word, plus playing music in the background.

If your going to be gaming or have to be the first on your block with the newest toys then go for the 3.4

ok thanks for your input, i think i'll stick with the 3ghz because i only really play the sims (yes depressing i know) and listen to music. also i backup my dvds a lot so i want good fast hardware that will give maximum performance for this!

    thanks for everyone's help!

I'm not a big fan of intel boards. But for the money you may want to get into an entery AMD 64 bit rig.
National I've put together a couple of them 3200+ processors and like the epox boards better.Seem to be faster and over clocks like a banchie

i think a P4 2Ghz is way overkill for just surfing the net ... you can do that with a 500MHz celeron so long you have the memory to fit all the webpages ... my brother had a 450MHz P3(i forget what video card) and he was able to surf the net, play music at the same time without it being too slow ... i hardly even noticed much of a difference with my current rig and that as far as surfing the net and music and even playing diablo 2(other than my rig can do higher res and direct3D)

Yep.That is a hot boards.I like it alot.

Mc adom. These amd are just as fast if not faster at most aplications. For gameing the 64 bit will be faster then intel.

The 3500+ 939 pin pulls higher fps then my friends p-4 3.2 e chip around 20 fps faster. We have the same video cards also.

I've also put together a few 3200+ with that epox board posted above and thats a fast little rig but the 3500+ is noticeably faster.
do as you will and have fun
