I have a laptop that turned on only for about 7 seconds for a while after taking out the battery and power cord for each time..now it won't do it anymore ( month later of just sitting in drawer. Is this Mobo..RAM...or power supply? Its a Inspiron 1000. Even with full battery and power cord plugged in. Please help, and how much will it cost to replace whatever is wrong?

Did you ensure that your PSU and ram is seated properly? Once you take out your battery, you need to go into Bios and set the date and time back, the other's setting you can set it as auto detect. By the way are you able to go into Bios? Lastly other than removing the battery, did you shift any jumpers or anything else?

ok, don't feel confortable taking apart the laptop to get to the PSU without some kind of manual, where can i get one (Its a Dell Inspiron 1000)? No i can't enter BIOS...as i said it won't turn on at all anymore, just the power light flashing for less than a second...then nothing. RAM in onboard...so i guess i have to open that to move it, or can it be moved? Please tell me how to open it up and move teh PSU. Also no beeps...just nothing at all..that why NEED HELP!!
    Thanks

The psu on laptops is the box on the outside, the various components just take their juice from that. How do you know the battery is fully charged?Does the charging light turn off after charging for a bit?
    Try these for me
1.plug the adapter in and check for any lights and the colour,as soon as you plug it in.
    2.Remove the battery,repeat 1.
3.Now press the power on switch, with the adapter plugged in,but with no battery
4.replace the battery, remove the power cord, press the power on switch.
5.the one you have tried, battery in,power cord in,press power switch.

Check the colour of the lights for each one and the response from the computer,This wont fix anything, but it should give us a better diagnostic idea's. :)

OK, now theres nothing....as in no lights no matter what I do :-( My local repair shop says that they've seen a lot of Inspiron 1000, 1100,1200 laptop with a blown motherboard, so they think this might be too. But why did it started up (probably from battery thats now dead) if the mother board was fried? and new mobo will cost me $360 at least plus maybe labor, so if it might not be this, it would help. So feel free to help me :D

    Thanks

Right then, the adapters dead,I think its 20v,you got some action before as you drained the last of the power from the battery, now theres no juice at all,If you have or can get hold of an electric test meter, plug in the adapter to the mains, stick the black common probe onto the outside of the plug that goes into your computer, and the other into the hole in the middle.Check it reads 20v.

Warning be very, very carefull, double check it's dc coming out of the plug read the adapter, check its a 20v adapter,Be sure its not just a straight cable to the mains power or you will have a really bad time.LOL.

BTW if you cant get hold of a testmeter, just try changing the fuse in the plug. :D

i decided to be.....daring so i opened it and found that if the LCD was connected to the motherboard then it won't start, but if i disconnect it and use an external monitor...everythings fine. But as soon as i plug the other scree (internal LCD) back in it shuts off again. Why is this? and how can this be fixed? can i just replace the cable?

So changing the LCD screen has brought back the charging and power lights?I dont see how a screen change can effect the power lights?

well i didn't change the LCD, just plugged the internal one out of the mobo and inserted an external one throught the monitor port on teh back....and then it works like a charm. So i think its shorting out, so i want to know if its just the cable, or on the motherboard, or i if i have to replace teh whole LCD (I really hope not)? I don't have any other laptop LCD around my house that fits....all my LCD for laptops are older, so the plugs don't fit. how can i test to see if its the plug on the mobo, or the plug on the LCD cable, or the plug on the LCD itself.

The Power connector on the back of the laptop might be wallored (hillbilly term...LOL) out!! When I plug the power into the back of my toshiba laptop...I have to wiggle and twist it JUST right in order for it to make contact!!!!

power supply/cord is fine, if the internal LCD plug isn't plugged in it starts up like a charm. I took it to two computer stores today, and they both say its the motherboard....and Dell being the @ssh@les they are, only put a 90-day warranty on the laptop..and its now 7 months..so yeah needlessly to say that spending $400 after buying a $600+ 7 months ago doesn't make me happy....so yeah...there goes any future business they'll have from me. And it came with the SiS Motherboard, so thats not a good board either, and to pay $400 for a new SiS board???? definitly not worth it. Wish there was an easier way to fix this...but now this laptop will just sit in the drawer.
