I am an Intel person but no doubt AMD are good also.
I have an Intel DX38BT that is an excellent mobo coupled with a Q6700 cpu but the bad news is it will only accept DDR3 ram so an extra cost as for the GPU it is really up to you how much you will spend.
I built the rig from scratch for about $700 (not sure in pounds sterling) and that was with an expensive case (you could always find a second hand)but excluding the GPU which cost me about $450 but it is lightning fast and can handle all i throw at it without a hiccup.

There are plenty of knowledgeable people here who will give you ideas but in the end it's up to you.

hello there and welcome to MGSupport!

Good news i'm from UK too so I can give you links to good online and local suppliers/stores :)

Btw if you have around £450 you could have a high end gaming computer so yeah
I'll give you two suggestions, both around your price budget, first one will be an AMD package.

    CPU - AMD Phenom X4 955 BE@3.2GHz £190
    http://misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=370832&CatId=2968
This is the highest range AMD quad core CPU and will be able to handle any game/program(s) you plan to be running, very good price the Intel i7 quad core at 3.2Ghz is around £800!!

    Mobo - Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P Socket AM3 motherboard £115
    http://misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=363782&CatId=3498
Nice Gigabyte mobo best quality & price.

    GPU- Sapphire Radeon 4850 £80
    http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=337055&CatId=2697
Definitely worth it, you won't be unimpressed with this top mid range card which can easily play games such as cod4 on high resolution and settings. This is very popular card these days :)

you will also need a new PSU to power all this :p

    PSU-OCZ OCZ500SXS-UK / StealthXStream 500W ATX Power Supply Unit / PSU / 120mm Fan
    http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/51006...-Power-Supply-Unit-PSU-120mm-Fan/Product.html
This is an OCZ 500w, no dodgy rubbish it will easily last long and power all these beasty components I have listed.

So yeah if you add all this up it's around £435, delievery will make it about £450 hopefully.

Now I will list an Intel CPU and Mobo with the same graphics card

    CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Socket LGA775 Processor @ 3.0 GHz £130
    http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=311219&CatId=2972
See how expensive Intel processors are compared to AMD? You get what you pay for, be aware this is c2d not quad core but still it is a great high range intel CPU ;)

    Mobo - Gigabyte EP45 DS3P socket LGA775 motherboard £90
    http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=316329&CatId=2954

SO this is £210, adding graphics and psu it will be around £340 so you are saving money here even though it's an intel cpu!
You can either keep it like this or notch the CPU up to the quad core(c2q) q9550 which runs at 2.8GHz and will bring the total price up to £410.

So yeah to sum things up you can decide to choose the AMD package or Intel Package, I would personally go with the INtel package with quad core as for same price as AMD you get a similar performance Intel processor even though it has slower clock speed it will be similar or possibly out perform.

I hope you managed to read up to this far lol! give thanks if you want as I spent good 20-30 mins writing/researching ;)

To find how much power you need, fill in all the relevant fields and it will give you an answer.
the Radion 4850 needs 133watts under stress but dont forget the rest of the system also needs power.
