Modem/Cable Broadband Question....

I'm thinking about ordering Comcast Cable Internet in the near futuret.... Here's my question.... If I were to purchase a separate modem from say, Best Buy or something... Would I be able to connect another computer up and receive the broadband access or do I specifically have to use another modem provided by Comcast?

We want to have access to the internet in 2 different rooms and do not have the option of running an ethernet cord and using a router (rooms are too far apart and no where to run the wire)... so i was contemplating buying a separate modem but I'm not sure if that would work or not... Thanks for your input

 

it depends on the rules that your ISP(comcast) set up ... i know my ISP only allows for one modem per internet connection, so i couldn't have two modems regardless of what brand they are, and im not even sure if that would be a factor at all ... you may want to look into a wireless router and set up the modem to the computer in which you'll need a more stable connection as ive read wireless isnt very stable

 

I did the same thing and I had to get a 2nd modem, but also a 2nd connection.
That means you will be paying for both modem connections as if they were owned by 2 different people. Twice the amount.

I suggested getting a Wireless-G Router and an access point. This way the 2nd system can just connect to the router and you won't have to pay anymore than the price of the router and access point, ever.

 

You would want an external cable modem so that computers B, C, etc. aren't dependent on having A up and running. Also, you won't have setup A as a server (simpler that way.
