modem issues

modem worked fine before reinstallation of win98se. did all updates, entered all dial-up connection info. it dials out and shakes hands with server, then seems to hang. No error messages ever come up??

Which country are you in?


Some dialup ISPs use a special dialler program that you have to install. Rydial is popular. Rydial at least provides a text log file in its folder which you can access and read what is happening (or not as seems to be the case.)

You say you have input the dialling data. Did you repeat this very carefully as 'rong' input here is very common.
Did you actually choose the right modem to apply the data to?
Have you set the correct speed of the modem?

How do you know your modem is actually dialling out? can you hear the squirling noise? Try dialling a friends telephone and get them to see if it is actually working

Is the modem shown in device manager as working?
There is also a test option in the properties, in device manager.
