Mom is having some trouble with her computer and internet. We're running Avast! antivirus and it won't update for some reason, so I speculate that something is stopping this process. Windows Security Center is saying that her antivirus software is out of date. I ran through all of the READ ME steps (correctly, I hope!) and have attached logs.

    Thanks for any help!!

Your logs are clean. It is possible that the malware has corrupted your AV program. I suggest that you uninstall Avast, run CCLeaner ( both the cleaner and the registry --> making the backup when prompted) and then after a reboot, download and reinstall it.

Let me know how that goes.

Thanks for the response. I finally got around to doing the steps you suggested (uninstall Avast, run CCleaner, reinstall Avast) but Avast still won't update it's program or virus definitions. Also, the Windows Security Alert shield is red and says the the virus protection software is out of date. Again, when I attempt to update it stalls out and says that it can't connect to the server. Any other ideas?

    Best regards,

Maybe it just wasnt completely removed.

    1. Download aswClear5.exe on your desktop
    2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
    3. Open (execute) the uninstall utility
    4. If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
    5. Click REMOVE
    6. Restart your computer

Now try reinstalling it. If all else fails, you can either go with a different AV program or post in the software forum for further assistance.

NOTE: After uninstalling Avast and before reinstalling, you should check to make sure the below folders and files have been deleted:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software
    C:\Program Files\Alwil Software

    C:\WINDOWS\avastSS.scr
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\aswBoot.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\aavmker4.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\aswFsBlk.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\aswmon.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\aswmon2.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\aswRdr.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\aswSP.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\aswTdi.sys

Also you should check to make sure nothing remains from Avast/Alwil in the below folders too:
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Thomas Pzynski\Local Settings\TEMP
