monitor help

just had my network guys at work "clean up" my home 'puter after being hi-jacked...
now it will only display in 16 colors.been to control panel and tried all the tabs...used standard monitor as default...and, cannot change to more than
640x800...everything is BIG! any help/ideas/suggestions

First thing to try, right click on an unused area of the desktop, click properties, choose the settings tab and see if you can change resolutions there.

Otherwise sounds like your video driver has been uninstalled. Can you post as much info about your computer as possible, so we can help you track down the correct driver. ie processor, operating system, video card etc..If in doubt get this program http://www.majorgeeks.com/EVEREST_Free_Edition_d4181.html and post the results here

monitor=17" KD-7310
motherboard=P6BX-Me
tower=Power Spec4325 w/intel celeron 366 w/6.4gigs /video ram=4mb,
os=windows 98
this is to be my gaming 'puter as my main one for the net is a compaq presario
so what ever fix i can get i am gonna have to switch power cords and key boards back and forth until i am back to previous color/resolution...

run the everest program and let us know what video card your system has, that way we can locate a driver for you.

Also did you try the right click on the desktop method?

ok...i'm back. rad the everest program and got a 47 page report....!!!
and it says...video adapter=standard pci graphics adapter(vga)
the 3d accelerator=3d labs permedia 2v...is this the info?

 

okay, first of all your problem is this

first of all try this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q131806/

if that doesn't work download this file http://www.3dlabs.com/support/drive...gory=1&os=8&driverlang=&prod=301&drivertype=1
and use a program like winrar or winzip to extract it. If you dont have a program like that get this http://www.majorgeeks.com/ZipGenius_d4696.html This program also provides a nice tutorial on how to extract files. Make sure you extract them to a folder of their own in a location you can easily access.

Once extracted do this step again http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q131806/ and specify the location where you extracted the files. Windows should take care of the rest.

 

OK.....home now and gonna try all of the above....wait one...

ok...did the first-no joy...got hopelessly lost in trying to follow the trail.
so did second and 3rd downloads and am gonna go get a shot and
think about what i gots to do...appreciate help...and patience..

if there is someone out there still using win 98, can they provide step by step instructions in upgrading video drivers. Its been a long time since I used it

 

just a quick note from here at work...
your directions were spot on about where to go and what to
do...it is eye who is cornfused about the ins and outs of "puters....i sit in front of one all day(designing with acad)
but as far as the "REAL" inner goings on with drives and boards and such...i need serious aid...once again thanks for the effort..i haven't given up yet...

it's fine, it's just that I haven't used 98 for years and was hoping someone here would be able to walk you through it who's had more experience with 98.

back up and runnin'...all colors and pixel size is correcto-mundo..

did all suggested...unzipped/saved to separate folder...and voila..
the driver i got from the 3d labs was an older version but it did da job..

my next "project" is to figure out why my flight simulator(longbow gold)will run on the 'puter WE just fixed...the windows 98 one,and not on my hooked to the web windows xp home edition...gotta be in directex version or sumtin
like dat...my commanche simulator runs on xp...go figure..
