Monitor Loses Signal

While booting my machine last night I noticed that the monitor would go black ~ 10 seconds after the boot finished and before I was able to open a program. After connecting to my laptop I was able to confirm nothing was wrong with my monitor - since the pic never changed. After booting in safemode I was able to confirm it wasn't the video card - since the pic never changed. Ran Norton, Spybot, CWShredder and nothing - except that Spybot found Z-Demon and something else that is slipping my mind. Anyway, both were removed. Not sure where to turn next. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. BTW, rebooted > 10x to no avail. Only safemode works.

FYI - Dell Dimension XPS500 running Win98SE. Not a lot of frills. Let me know if you need more info. Regards.

 

Your forget one little detail what your video cards and the driver number ???

click on settings tab
click on advanced button
click on adapter tab (note info there)
click on properties button

Well, the update is...I changed my display properties and no longer go to a black screen. Now I get the blue screen of death with a couple interchanding Fatal Exceptions. I'm wondering if it could have something to do with "Critical Updates" (ha ha) that I installed the other night from microsoft.com. Anybody ever experience this?
