Monitor Recommendation

Full disclosure - this is the third thread I have created in response to a video card upgrade saga that seems to be funneling me straight to Hell . . .

    My budget is <$150

I am returning a Viewsonic monitor that does not seem to play well with any of my hardware. So I am looking for a possible replacement.

I would like a 24" monitor, I will purchase matte but prefer glossy. Looking for a DVI and HDMI connections. A 5ms response time or less is preferred. I don't think my budget will allow for any high-end refresh rate models. Brand does not matter, I appreciate anything of quality that falls within my budget. I am happy gaming at 1080P, I don't need anything demanding.

I will use the monitor for gaming. I currently have an i5 4670K at 4.2 ghz, a 6 gig Gigabyte 1060 GTX , and 8 gigs of ram. For reference, I was using an LG W2241T with a max resolution of 1650 x 1080.

So, any recommendations? Thanks for any help.

It is hard (for me anyway) to recommend monitors because what my eyes like, yours may not. Plus you are limiting your options by requiring both DVI and HDMI. I note Amazon only lists 11 24" with both HDMI and DVI. More than 4 times that if you remove that restriction. You have more options just use an adapter.

You will also increase you options considerably if you can increase your budget to $200, which will get you a better monitor too.

But you really need to narrow down your focus.

What type of stand do you need. I for example, require a stand with height adjustment (not just tilt and swivel) because my monitors must fit under my desk's hutch. Do you want a thin bezel or does it matter? I use two monitors so a very thin bezel is desired. I have a nice set of computer speakers so I don't need or want to waste money on monitors with built in speakers.

I am curious as to why you say your ViewSonic didn't work for you. Unless you just happened to get a faulty one, monitors should just work as monitors work through industry standards. Remember, it is up to the graphics card to communicate with the monitor.

    I use a Benq GL2250HM - 21.5" model but the GL2450HM is a 24.5" model.
It has HDMI, DVI and if you're really pushed, VGA - this is the main reason I bought it (actually I have 2); it was about the only 21" monitor that had all three inputs.
For VGA sound can connected using separate cables - it has built in speakers, though with HDMI the sound doesn't seem as loud it might be for 2 x 1W built-in speakers ??
Native res. 1024 x 1920 IIRC - specs on the Benq website, though response times and contrast ratios are average (1:1000, 2-5ms depending on where you read), these quantities seem to depend severely on the exact measurement method (correct me if I am wrong)

I believe the GLxx50HM range is now out of production, but there are many inexpensive ones round, new or second-hand. I got mine from ebay for <GBP 70 incl. delivery and they were as-new.

This not a true recommendation, I am not pushing this model as there may be better out there now.

The Viewsonic would not display correctly with an adapter. My new 1060 only had DVI-I an HDMI connection, the Viewsonic only featured DVI and VGA inputs, none of which would display correctly. I installed drivers the monitor and the newest driver for the card, not luck. I adjusted settings for quite awhile without results. I tried an array of adapters as well. I was getting all kinds of display anomalies, or no signal at all. All of my lesser monitors worked fine. So I sent it back. I am going to purchase one with an HDMI port which I should have done initially.

I have heard good things about Benq monitors. Weird name for sure. They are on my radar. Thanks for the advice.
