    Bit of a weird one.

I am using a Benq 24 inch 144hz monitor with Geforce 780 GTX
I am not going into too much detail unless it is requested but essentially all games are running at highest graphics settings (or near enough) and very high frames per second.

Game crash is full PC restart with reboot with critical failure in windows event log.

CS GO, Arma 3, Dark souls 2, Heroes of the Storm and some others all run perfectly at 144hz.

GTA 5, Project Cars and Rocket League crash after 5 mins at 144hz but run perfectly at 120hz.

Shroud of the avatar, Planetside 2 and Killing floor 2 crash at 120hz/144hz after 5 mins but run perfectly at 60hz.

ARK survival evolved crashes after 5 minutes at any hz (looking to try a manual FPS cap tonight)

Anyone have a clue what’s going on? Its really not to much of an issue because all my games (bar ARK) run perfectly, Its just that I have to manually keep changing the Hz and there is obviously something going on here.
Anyone got any suggestions? (outside of the usual, check for viruses, update drivers etc) I am hoping if I can find what cause the crash it can help me get ARK working. PC isn’t over heating or anything like that, it may just be that some of these games are not designed to run at higher refresh rates, but I haven’t seen other 144hz users with the same crashing.
    Cheers 

    Welcome to Majorgeeks :major

CPU and details of PSU make/model/Wattage, please?

Thank you for the welcome :)

CPU is an Intel i7 4770k using Cyberpowersystem.co.uk "safe overclock" PSU is 800w modular Corsair.

This probably originally surfaced with GTA 5 and more recent Nvidia drivers. I spent weeks trying to fix it and tons of forum posts, even purchased a new PSU off the advice of a lot of people (previously was 650w) but problem still persisted (see http://forum.projectcarsgame.com/sh...arts-PC!-Cant-play-for-more-than-10-minutes-()

Then I randomly decided to change the refresh rate in windows from 144hz down to 60hz and problem went away completely, not a single crash, same with Project Cars which is the two games I was specifically having problems with. I then tested with 120hz and no crash after hours of game play, switching to 144hz in windows crashes within 5 to 10 minutes though.

So far I have eliminated crashing in all games. Its just Ark that has started doing so even at 60hz, so there must be something either in my driver settings, or maybe the CPU clock (although I had tried disabling overclock for GTA and still had issues) that my PC doesn't like. Literally no clue though!

Just a follow up to this. I did put a capped FPS command into Ark console. Game stopped crashing.

Ties in with all my examples above. My PC seems capable of running games incredibly well, but certain refresh rates/frames per second, seem to crash it.

Don't get it! CS GO for example runs at 300 fps (capped) at 144hz zero problems. I might try uncapping it and see if that recreates the crash

Judging from the little I read in the linked topic, I think your best bet is to go the individual game route for tweaking, I can't see anything that makes me think that there's a core Windows/hardware/driver issue here.

Clearly your problem is with Ark. Visit the game's website and and look for a possible solution.

My problems with ARK were solved when I capped the FPS to 60. My problems with project cars were solved when I capped the FPS to 60.

My problems with Planetside 2, Shroud of the Avatar, Rocket League, Killing Floor 2 wtc were solved when I moved the refresh rate down from 144hz to either 100 or 60hz (capping FPS might have had similar affect though)

So clearly there is something wrong with my hardware at high FPS/refresh rate, just not sure what and nobody seems to know :( Its not overheating.

I do not believe it's a hardware problem. What OS are you using?
Also, some of the games can run at higher refresh rates and fps. That means it's a game specific problem.

Thank you for the reply. I am using Windows 7, which is fully updated. Considering Windows 10 at the minute but not 100% convinced yet.

As a fellow gamer I recommend you avoid Win 10 a while longer. All of my hardcore gaming friends are back on Win7 except a few fanboys and they are having trouble.

    What resolution are you running?
You are on the bleeding edge for gaming. 144Hz is not reliable in all games as you have found out. As long as you have a stable 60Hz you are doing better than most.
I game at 4K and 60 Hz when I can. Like you, I have to configure and test each game to see what they will do.
