Monitor smell question

I have a Dell 2407wfp 24" LCD monitor that has recently begun to emit a noticeable smell. I notice it after the monitor has been on for a few minutes, and if I leave it on for a while (1+ hours) I really start to notice it in my sinuses and eyes. I've used it off and on over the past six months or so, and even after having been off for a while (months) the smell comes right back.

Obviously this isn't good - after reading some of the posts here about monitors and bad stuff that can happen as a result of ignoring their smells, I'm more than a little worried. I figure it's time to get rid of the thing, but I'm wondering if there's any chance of repairing it so that the smell goes away. Anyone run into this problem before? Is there any chance I can fix this thing, or should I cut my losses and get a new one? Thanks.

Cut your losses and move on.

At the very least, it's the internal power supply. Unless you are extremely handy, bored or both, it likely isn't worth the cost and effort of attempting to repair it.

Is the monitor under three years old? If so, it may still be under warranty (most Dell LCD monitors come with 3 years parts/labor standard).

If not, you should be able to find a decent 24" for about $150, give or take. Two brands worth looking at are ASUS (great color quality, 3 year express exchange warranty) and Hannspree/Haans-G (one of the better budget-priced brands).

    Hope this helps. :)

Thanks. I am neither extremely bored nor very handy, so guess it's time to go monitor shopping.

Also, do you know if I should be at all concerned about potential exposure to whatever's been smelling? I've had to use the monitor from time to time and try to keep the room well-ventilated when I do so, but the smell is still noticeable.
I saw someone over in the other thread recommending the poster have his apartment scrubbed down, walls cleaned, etc...but then again in that case, the poster had dropped and broken his monitor, whereas mine is undamaged.

I noticed that poster also and I believe they were referring to a CRT monitor that got dropped and broken. Not the same thing in your case though. Still, it's a good idea to replace/return your monitor because some components might be overheating and could possibly cause a fire.

And that other poster was a bit off the wall. Those monitor threads got EXtreme. Don't take them as the norm.

Still, if you are noticing a chemical type smell even months apart then there is something wrong and it is not worth the exposure to fumes or possible fire risk. I'd shop for a new monitor or check my warranty. (Full disclosure: I hate fumes of any type and err on the side of caution.)
