Monitor turns off?

    Hey guys,
A friend got this monitor off Facebook. It's a Samsung Sync Master 712n. It would turn on and run for about 15 minutes or so then just turn black, the light on the power button would stay green (not turn yellow like it went to sleep).
They gave the monitor to me and told me to keep it. It doesn't feel like it's getting warm at all so I don't think it's a heating issue.

It does smell like someone smoked around it. The people that they bought it from said they never had a problem with it and it worked great.
I'd really like to get it working so I can have a smaller test monitor for other rigs.
    Any suggestions?

I have a SyncMaster 902WM that goes black at random times. I have a friend that owned another model Samsung that did the same thing.
I think a resistor needs to be replaced.
Mine is currently sitting in the basement waiting for me to take it apart and have a look. Don't hold your breath waiting for me to fix it. :-D

    Thank you,
Do you know which resistor that would be?

    Hi

Kinda think its a hardware failure of backlight/inverter etc but just to rule a few basics out, have you changed the power and VGA cable from that monitor to ones you know work?

May not be the issue, but if it is its an easy cheap fix.

I haven't tried that yet, but thank you David. I usually overlook the little things.....makes me not the most effective IT guy around.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't a backlight/inverter failure usually allow a faint image to appear when you shine a flashlight/torch on the screen?
Mine doesn't show a thing so I assumed it needed a resistor.

That is one way to test them. Look at this thread.
First thread asking for help I made.
