A very important precedent was set in Australia (yesterday) regarding the responsibity of ISP's in preventing the piracy of movies.

    From Google search

iiNet (Australian ISP) slays Hollywood in landmark piracy case‎
The giants of the film industry have lost their case against ISP iiNet in a landmark judgement handed down in the Federal Court today. ...

    iiNet's defence (basically) was:-
iiNet is not responsible if an iiNet user uses that system to bring about copyright infringement ... the law recognises no positive obligation on any person to protect the copyright of another.

This could have far reaching worldwide effect if not overturned. It basically means that ISP's do not have to institute controls over what users download.

I tried searching for the link I had while back. I may have not posted it here. But it was on another forum I read. And it was about Australia wanting to block from people downloading like this pretty much. This may be that thing.. But they wanted to block downloads from movie, music, porn and etc and they were going to build a thing to block all those services so no one could do it. But people were replying saying that by the time Australia builds that they go broke by the time its done and etc. But maybe Ill find the link.

You're correct, silas. The Australian Government were/are trying to get ISP's from allowing Child porn, etc., to be accessible by Australian Internet users.

I think they might have been considering a type of reverse "HOSTS" file, in that any URL that appeared on the "HOSTS" file was banned from access by Aussie users. I don't know what effect this latest decision will have on censorship of the Net.

Case was overturned by the Australian courts http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8498100.stm

Have to say personally it was right decision as the ISP should not be accountable for what users download. Although in same story at BBC it looks like in Italy YouTube is in the frame now,

Italy the first to ban You tube, the irony.

Google needs to have someone whacked :-D Or pay the right people...This case is just a warning "How dare you make money distributing copyright material without cutting in the Family!"

I'm not sure if I came across in favour of the ISP's, but I do. It's like holding the alcohol and car manufacturers being responsible for drunk drivers, IMO.

I agree . . . too much have we as a society removed personal responsibility from individual actions. If you want to hold ISP's responsible for users actions, might as well blame the manufacturer of the computer they used to connect to the internet.

Enough, already - you break the law, you take the fall . . .
