I posted below about problems getting the drivers to load for a dfe-530tx+. I finally replaced it with a used smc from a friend. I had also purchased a di-784 dual band router and a dwl-ag530 pci wireless adapter. When I first installed the ag530 it was working. I then tried hooking it up through its ethernet card/cable and that also worked. I disconected the cable from the ethernet card and wanted to resume my wireless network. It now doesn't work.I have removed the ag530 and software several times and reinstalled. The device manager (win98se) says the adapter is working fine. In the d-link control it appears to be receiving a signal (65% in g mode) from the router, but no matter which browser I use I cannot get on the internet. The firewall (sygate) is turned off. I e-mailed d-link but no response. The router is set up with its default settings. Does anyone know why I cannot connect to the internet? This is my first attempt at a network, so I maybe doing something wrong. I really didn't think that this was supposed to be that difficult. :-(
Main pc - windows xp home edition
Second pc - win98se cabled to a smc ez-net ethernet card
    Third pc - win98se wireless dwl-ag530
    Thanks in advance

What type of internet access are you using(DSL or Cable)?

If you are using DSL you will have to set your username, password, and select PPoE connection with in the router configuration.

Check your Internet explorer settings and ip settings.
Right click internet eplorer and click on properties. Go to the connections tab at the top, click on lan settings and make sure the check box for auotmatically detect setting is checked. Click ok and/or apply back through the screens.
To check your IP settings go to start, click on control panel. Double click network connections. Right click the network network connection you are hooked up through, wireless or local area and choose properties. Highlight internet protocol by single left clicking on the name, not the check box. click on properties and make sure the box for obtain IP adress automatically and obtain DNS server automatically are checked. Click ok and/or apply back through these screens as well. Try connecting to the internet.

If it is cable it is possible that the IP address that your PC obtained when you hooked directly to the modem is not releasing. Try going to start, run, type cmd, hit enter. When the command prompt comes up you will want to be at a c prompt " C:\>" . From there type 'ipconfig /release' and hit enter.
You should see IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway come up with all zeros. Next type 'ipconfig /renew'. After a few seconds the same items above should come back with the IP address, subnet, and gateway now containing numbers.

Close out any explorer screens and try internet again.

    Hi
I finally got the wireless to work. The whole network is now operating. I can see the whole network on each pc. The Internet access is working on all three pcs now. I am still having one problem though. I keep getting a disconnect from the Internet. It happens randomly. I contacted Verizon about the problem because I have the router set up as dynamic. I didn't know whether to use dynamic, static or PPoE. They told me to use the dynamic, which is currently working with the above-mentioned problem. What exactly happens is I will be browsing the web and click on a link. It doesn't work. I try it repeatedly and finally it works. During the same period of time I will also try refreshing the page and it won't reload. I get the site cannot be found error. This happens for a minute or so, and then it all works again. It happens randomly. I tried turning off the router and restarting, but it doesn't seem to correct the problem. The modem is a Westell wire speed. I have tried both firefox and explorer and it happens in both. I was thinking there was a connection problem between the router and modem. Of course because Verizon doesn't sell D-Link, they offer no support. D-Link never responded to my e-mail. While I have your attention, I also have another question. All my pcs show up on the network. Only the one running xp shows any of the files that it has to share. How to I show the files on the pcs running win98se? When I access the pc icons there is nothing listed.
    Thanks for helping me

There should be an option in your router configuration that lets you set how and when the router connects through the modem. The one I have at home is set to always active. I know one of the other options is on demand. Maybe when you are reading through a page it times out and the router logs off the internet causing to have to reconnect when you click on the next link. Check this and see what it is set to.

As for the Win98 shared files...silly question..but have you set the file as shared? If so check the security settings of the shared file by right clicking and going to properties. Under the security tab check the access rights for users. You may also want to add everyone to make sure the rights go through ok. click on add and type everyone in the box and click ok. Make sure you give the everyone group, once created, the needed rights for that folder by checking off the check boxes on the bottom half of the screen.
