Re: SearchMiracle Problem not going away

I think the problem is that the ETremover for the elitetoolbar is now out of date because these "malware" people have now detected the new version 1.1.
I just found this site and this tool. I have been frustrated with deleting this thing with adaware, only to run spybot after, to finding the same thing.
Within the last 2 days, yes the ETRemover worked, but today i find the same elitetoolbar back on my computer.
It is this that is popping up the "searchmiracle" ads. They are the most annoying thing in the world.
I'm wondering what is the avenue that this elitetoobar takes to get in our computers. Is there something we can do to prevent them from even getting in? Is it something we are using?
I've got every update, anti-virus, firewall, anything u would need to protect a computer and still this little #!@%^& keeps getting in.

    Help us please!

    Hi Nanook,

Generally, it is a good idea to start with the Cleanup Tutorial below:

READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan and Virus Removal

There are only a few of us Volunteers who regularly offer advice in this forum. Running through the above Tutorial will remove a lot of stuff that would otherwise clog a HijackThis Log and save us valuable time.

Please let us know the steps that you are able to complete and the ones that give you problems. Note that you need to be in Safe Mode with System Restore OFF (if you have it) and have the Viewing of Hidden Files ENABLED as per the instructions in the link. Make sure to do the Online Scans.

Post back and let us know how you fared. Also, send us a HijackThis Log. Please be sure to follow the instructions below:

Note that your HijackThis should be up-to-date (v1.99.1) and MUST be extracted to its own safe folder – C:\Program Files\HijackThis! Should you need a Fresh Download of HJT, get it HERE: HijackThis v1.99.1

Also note that, before you scan, you MUST close all running programs including your web browser, e-mail and items in the system tray.

Please save your HJT Log as a .txt File and attach it via the "Manage Attachments" tool in the Additional Options section when you post.

I’ve been tied up with work lately and cannot visit this forum too often these days, but somebody will try to take a look when they get a chance.

    Best luck :)
    PP

hmmm. that is a lot of stuff to start downloading onto my computer. i've done the hijack this and found the elitetoolbar stuff. and deleted it. i think that adaware and spybot should suffice. i have norton anti-virus, i run sygate firewall. these applications should be enough to protect my computer.

what i want to know is how this thing is getting into my computer. most of the things in that tutorial i've done.

what pisses me off is that i have a protected computer. i've done my job by installing the above and keeping them updated. have updated all of MS's patches, i now run Firefox, right?

so why am i getting this thing? that is what we have to find out, not how to keep deleting it with every application known to man, only to find it there the very next time we scan again.

i'm not trying to be uppity, here. if we don't yet know how it is getting in, then everything else seems futile.

If they were sufficient to protect your computer, you would not be having a problem. Nothing guarantees that you will not get infected. But the items you mentioned help reduce the risk of problems. Most problems start with the user of the PC. Surfing habits, not reading what they click on,...etc. What you download and where you download it from is also a factor. In addition proper configuration of your protect tools is important too.

None of the items you mentioned above will remove the Elite Toolbar by themselves. In most cases it requires manual intervention.

Do you still have a problem on your PC? If so, complete ALL steps of the READ ME FIRST in the order provided and then if necessary continue on to posting a HijackThis log as indicated by PP.
