I have the FiOS router that was given to me by FiOS...

I hate it, it blocks everything I try to do and I always have to go in and setup things multiple times. They never work when I want them too...

Example: I wanted to AirDroid (an app that you can browse files on your android device by running the app then going to the browser link shown on your computers browser) and it required port 8888. This port was blocked so I figured I would setup port 8888 to be forwarded for the IP that was listed....both UDP and TCP....still doesn't work.

    SO,

I would like to know if I can bypass this router all the together? I am sick of never being able to network through it.

Since it is a FiOS router I assume I need to have it installed still, but can basically just run through it to another router?

You can swap routers. As for the port blocking, that I do not understand, unless you are trying to get from the outside in. You should not have to open any ports, since the router is smart enough to open and close them as it goes. i would suggest doing a full reset on the router to reset it back at Factory settings.

As for a different router, you could probably swap it with another if you wanted, but you would not get any support from Verizon if stuff goes wrong.

Make sure you check the model you have. My Fios router is a router/modem combination, meaning I can't really replace it. You could get a Netgear router, but you would have to ask Fios to swap the modem router combination with just a modem.

The FiOS system will probably require that you use their Modem/Router, BUT, you can turn the Router off in their unit and connect your own. How to do that depends on the exact Modem/Router you have. Some have the ability to just turn the Router off, other require you to set their Router to Bridge mode.
