    :-D

SO...I'm going to Dallas, Texas to visit my little sister (she's 28) who moved there about 6 months ago.

I know we've had gun discussions on here and I Think the US has much more lenient laws on them than the rest of the civilized world (or at least the UK), but Texas is literally like their own little country. You are allowed to actually carry them around with you and it's legal to shoot someone if they come on your property. :eek

Anyway, so I live in Pennsylvania. We are a big hunting state, but you really don't hear talk of guns at all.

When I go out to visit my sister, we decided we'd have some fun and head over to the gun range and take a lesson, rent a gun and do some shooting.

Here's my sister's latest text to me after doing a little research:

"We can rent a sub-machine gun for $30. What do you think? Lol"

    Ummm...roflmao

On further investigation, apparently we can rent anything including an AK-47. :major:eek

That's amazing Laura. You go for it girl!! I am nicely envious! :-D Screw the shopping mall; hit up the range!! Cannot wait to hear all about it.

hehe....I know! Right? How cool is that?

I'm just hoping we don't get kicked the hell out for being so damn clueless. :-D I'm so taking my camera too! That better be allowed!

I'm also wondering how hurt we could get trying to shoot some big a$$ gun.

I've shot a gun twice in my life. Once in college and once as a kid. I can't even remember them.

    Extreme cool!

Yes I was wondering whether a camera would be permitted.
And how many forms you have to sign!! I don't know how these gun ranges work being from the UK but there must be some kind of "How to" lessons before sending you out there! :-D

    Best I got is a .22 squirrel shooter :-D

So, my sister said that if you go to a Walmart, they sell guns without a permit. lol I can't imagine they'd be too picky about forms.

I think you have to take a lesson if you've never done it, but considering that I wouldn't even know how to load a gun without a lesson, that's not too much of an issue for me. LOL

They better let me bring my camera. I have got to get pictures of this. I'm sure it'll be completely ridiculous looking.

Be very careful if you try firing some of the larger calibers.
If you're not careful, could hurt your shoulder.
Have also seen some beautiful black eyes from the butt-stock kicking back and up on people.

I can imagine! We won't be doing anything too much, I imagine. I don't want a 22, though.

I also don't want to get hurt doing it.

Of course, I could always tell some exciting story about that though.:-D

It's scary how many people are warning me of the harm that can come to me. Do I seem that much like someone who would hurt themselves?? Oh wait...don't answer that. :p

Emma...where are you again??? I think you're the only one that didn't tell me I was going to 'put my eye out'. LOL

No, BUT, it is pretty common for a novice to either hurt their shoulder with a rifle or blacken their eye with a scope.

Now, about that 28 yr. old sister..................:drool:drool

Just don't want to see you hurting yourself by accident.

Tim have you no shame?rolleyes I'd love to see the pics of you guys shooting,be careful though Laura those big guns put out a lot of heat so you need to keep you guys have to keep cool by wearing tight fitting conductive clothing with a low thermal resistance and you have to keep each other cool by dowsing yourselves down with a high thermal capacity fluid.

I just want you to be safe:)

    :-D:p

Nah I'm really jealous I hope to one day experience firing some real guns, full auto especially:yum

I'm not sure Rikky, with all those big fancy long words and stuff, but I'm thinking you just told me that shooting at a gun range is the same as entering a wet tee shirt contest. :p

Should be fun...I'm looking forward to it. :)

The fully automatic sounds great until you think about the amount of ammo you'd have to buy just for 5 minutes. :-D

Heck yeah, a gun range! Have a 'blast'!! :-D

Seriously, if you have little experience with guns, consider an AR-15 in the 5.56 or .223 caliber. The recoil is negligible. If you fire fairly fast, it feels like someone is pushing your shoulder back, opposed the hard hit you can get from some shotguns and rifles. Also, depending on how they charge for ammo, you might look into buying some ammo online, as it is much cheaper. Last time I bought .223 ammo, it was like $30 or so for 100 rounds. Locally, they usually want $7 to $20 for 20 rounds.

With a little instruction, the AR is not difficult to load or shoot. The 'recoil' is nothing. One thing you might look into, is quality hearing protection. I would look for 30db or better ear muff style hearing protection. They most likely have some there you can use or rent, but they may not be the best. You can really mess up your hearing shooting with poor ear protection. Plus, you are visiting the south, think about that pair of ear muffs on some stranger in the summer.... :-D

Now, if they rent a M-16 in the 5.56, rent that! Semi auto and auto... Shoots the same ammo, just is the military version of the AR.

Laura, you will have a blast!! i haven't done that in forever.

With an intro lesson you'll be fine. They will probalby come hang out with you for a while after the lesson just to make sure you remember not to turn around with the gun or something. They will also keep an eye on you and will come back to correct anything potentially dangerous. They may also come back to offer tips once you've shot a few rounds so expect lots of visits.

They probably won't let you use a flash to take pictures. Depends on how the range is set up , they may let you take a picture pretending to shoot between actual shots.

Maybe someone else can answer whether it's usual to have a rangemaster at a private range. Rangemaster will know there are newbies and be watching too. You won't be left to fend for yourself much but it's fun.

Whatever you do, don't think of holding the gun a little away from you because it hurts when it pushes you. I did that once when my shoulder was starting to ache. Left a nice blue mark.

Nice video. Probably safe to assume that Heather ain't one of them there New York City girls.

Laura, I'm not familiar with the differences between state laws but around here you can carry a gun, get a concealed weapon's permit and shoot someone on your property -- within some rules. Since it's protected under the right to bear arms, I'm sure there is some version of that in every state and not just Texas. They do tend to be pretty extreme about their guns and take full advantage of the laws that are available in Texas!

  24. Phantom

    Phantom Brigadier Britches

I’m sure that you'll have a great time, Laura. Australia is a bit better than the U.K. in the gun laws, but still pretty strict. Not much chance of firing full-auto weapons here.
The most important things to remember are about personal safety. Eye protection, ear protection. Just one or two rounds out of a .45 pistol without ear protection will make you wish you had. Other common sense things like never grabbing the barrel, etc.
Even when used correctly, a heavy day's shooting with large cal. and shotguns can leave you with a lot of burst shoulder capillaries. Not necessarily painful, but unsightly for a few days.
Have fun, Laura. And yes, we need pics.!;):cool

Be careful, each state is different. Castle Doctrine here, but some states require you to retreat, even in your own home. :confused

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_doctrine

I know my state laws, and am comfortable with my use of them. Just make sure you know the laws of the state you are going to, so you don't break a law by mistake.

The gun range my sister looked at does a 2 hour lesson, which includes the gun rental and the safety gear. You have to buy your own ammo from them, unfortunately. I'm sure that's how they make most of their money on an $8 pistol rental. I'm not sure I'd buy ear gear for one afternoon, but maybe I'll bring my ear plugs I have to go under them.

I'd love to shoot something big and bad, but I'm also not interested in bruises when I'm done. :-D

Thanks!:) I bet we'll have a good time. It'll be interesting for sure. I hope they let me bring my camera. This is definitely something I want to get shots of.

My sister is clerking for a federal judge in Dallas. She's been talking to him. He has two teenage girls that own guns (rolleyes...that is so weird to me). He's sort of offered to either go, or have us go to his farm and he'd let us shoot. That might be more interesting. Of course, he was joking about allowing us to shoot the feral pigs on his farms for free. At least she thinks he was joking. :eek

You think she has to wear that tank top so she can shoot that well? :-D

    Yikes on the burst capillaries!

This is starting to sound like more work than I intended! LOL

Believe me, I will be trying to get pics. I'm not sure I'll share with anyone, but there will be some. :-D

Texas is like it's own country, because at one time, it was!

We are different than other states and I like that frankly. I am just waiting for Texas to become a right to carry state, then I don't have to worry about having my entire right side of my body sweating up a storm with a concealed handgun.

They do have a feral hog problem in Texas, he might not have been joking. And I think Heather wears that top for YouTube popularity more than marksmanship... ;) You can always head a few hours east of Dallas, and I will take you shooting. We have an indoor and outdoor range here. I might could find a gun or two for you to shoot.

Hrlow, the stock in the video is legal. If you think about how a 'bump fire' works, the trigger is reset and pulled once for every shot. You 'fire' it by pushing the gun away from your body, while keeping pressure on the trigger with your other hand.

I am surprised they are able to sell that stock. I would get one, but too expensive.

there is Semi and Burst. Burst is three rounds with one trigger squeeze.

Are you sure about that top, Fred. I think maybe it could really help her aim somehow!rolleyes:-D

Now you have me worried that the Judge may not have been joking about the pigs. Even so, I don't think those pigs have anything to worry about with me.

Btw, I am so picturing you opening up this huge double door closet, with pomp and flourish. LOL

    heh

HA! You'd so be getting your visa, moving to Texas to room with Fred and registering for your class to carry a concealed gun.

Nope, I am pretty sure that top does not enhance accuracy. And If I was traveling, the guns would be in the trunk... :-D

Actually, Shreveport is almost half way between where I am and Dallas. They have some ranges there if you, or any Texas people are interested in meeting for a friendly range shoot. If anyone is halfway interested, I will look more into the ranges in that area.

First, if you are going to go to Disney...You want Disney WORLD in Florida. Disney Land is like the poor version of Disney World. :)

Coasters are awesome! We have a ton here. Don't you have them in the UK?:confused I"m not sure about that one though. Do you only go up and then down and then it's over?
