After trying to clean a batch of trojans from a system, I finally ran across your site. I followed the Read & Run Me First post - with a couple of exceptions.

    1. I could not uninstall the old version of Java from the Add/Remove Control Panel app. I was able to delete the directory which contained the files, but was not sure what to do about the current version. I have downloaded the current Java Runtime files, but have not installed them.

    2. After running Combofix, I did not save the log. Just too many hours at this, I guess. I ran it again, this time saving the log, but this was after running all previous programs. I hope that doesn't mess things up too much.

Attached are 4 of the 5 logs, with the remaining log in the next post.

Prior to running these 5 programs, I had removed most of the identified trojans. However, netstat showed persistent connections to APNIC assigned IPs and multiple connections to mail servers. As well, there were delays of 3 - 5 seconds waiting for the Start menu and sub-menus to appear.

After running these 5 programs, and after several reboots, netstat shows no connections to outside IPs. The 3 - 5 second pauses remain, but that may be due to the machine not being connected to its server. I have not yet logged in under any other user name (except for the initial run of CCleaner), for fear of re-igniting the malware.

I appreciate your time, and any suggestions.

    Thank you.

Your logs are clean. However, did you set these:

    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbars\Restrictions present
    O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
    O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
    O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbars\Restrictions present

Combo had fixed two system files that were corrupt on your first run.

That's great news about the logs. The 06 entries were set by me in an effort to help eliminate accidental installation of toolbars. Now that I've found the post titled "how to Protect yourself from malware", I will be following its suggestions.

Is it safe for me to now clean up the files, folders and logs created by the scanning/repairing programs?

Thank you for your expertise and time.

Yes, here are the cleanup instructions:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
