Ohh, this takes me back to my college days when our teachers would show us how to blow up capacitors in our days off. Good times.

The big companies are not interested about faulty parts, as long as they can roll-out their PC's and meet their targets.
How is the average person going to know whether they have a 'leaky' capacitor?
I for one wouldnt be opening up the case and looking for a spillage.

If you navigate to the impressive list of potential faults on the 'Identifying Bad Caps' page of the website you might well need to do this one day!

I suppose...with the cost of motherboards these days...I doubt it though. Computer parts have become affordable enough that it is easier, quicker, and sometimes cheaper to replace, than to fix.

Yea I agree Adrynalyne, removing & installing components from a six layer MB, is not a job for a novice, way to much potential of trashing the MB, which they do point out though. Faulty/Leaky Caps have been with us from the start, but the percentage is so low I know I will not lose any sleep over it. But informative find studiot

I have come across quite a few of these failed cap boards. You are quite right that it make no commercial sense to service them, swapping out being cheaper with the outcome more certain. However coming from a hardware background it pains me not to determine the component fault and fix it.

I hope at least some geeks will find the link interesting.
