Mouse freezes on initial boot up

I have run Adaware and Spybot also Spyware Blaster. I have uninstalled the mouse drivers and reinstalled them umpteen times. I have defragged. I have run chkdsk /r. I have even reduced the hardware acceleration in Display Properties. I have searched the net for solutions (apart from here) and have taken all the advice on offer. Still my mouse freezes. I got so desperate I even did a format and reinstall of my OS, and it helped very little.

I run Winxp with SP2. I have 1024mb RAM. The mouse is an intellimouse 1.3, and is quite new. It is a PS2 mouse. I have tried another mouse and the problem still persists. I would stress that 9 times out of ten this only happens on cold boot, but it is extremely annoying. I have to press the reset button before the mouse comes to life again.

I have made a logfile from hijack this, but it means nothing to me. I don't even know how to post it here.

I am ready for headering walls. Please help me.

It could be a loose connection between the PS/2 port and the motherboard. Do you have USB ports? If so, try a USB Mouse.

Ok you have to be a little more specific on the details of your mouse,
    - is it wireless? If so do you use a wireless keyboard with the same connector? Are there any other wireless devices nearby?
    - if you have another system, use that ps2 port, if you don't, try using your mouse on the keyboard ps2 port (This will make your system slow but you can check if the ps2 port is functioning properly)
    - Try an USB mouse to see if your mouse driver is working
    - Is it an optical mouse? It sometimes happens (rarely) that you have are dealing with an I/O conflict

Thanks for the response to my post.

I have tried a USB mouse, and another PS/2 mouse and the system still froze up at initial boot.

The mouse is a Microsoft Intellimouse 1.3a PS/2 mouse. It is neither wireless or optical. It has two buttons and a scroll wheel, and never gave any bother up to now.

I have tried plugging the mouse into the keyboard PS/2 port, and when I restarted the PC the mouse was frozen in the centre of the screen.

I don't know whether it was just a coincidence, but this trouble just started after I had uninstalled a free metric conversion program.

I can't understand why I am still getting this problem after doing a complete format and reinstall of my windows operating system from scratch!

Try using a different keyboard and see if that helps. I've seen some motherboards that for whatever reason seem to draw too much power and cause the motherboard/system to fail to boot. It's been a while, but it's something to look at. Also, check the power supply since your motherboard may not be getting enough power.

Remember, even a keyboard or mouse will draw power through the motherboard. Also, check if legacy USB is enabled or disabled since that could also be a factor when using a USB keyboard or mouse.

Wyatt_Earp I have the latest Windows updates installed.

I will try another keyboard when I can borrow one (which might not be for a couple of days), and report back. I'm afraid I don't know how to check the power supply.

Earlier on the mouse froze again when the machine had been idle for just over an hour. Up to now it has only happened on cold boot, when I fire up in the morning! I have had PCs for over 10 years and this is the first time this has happened so consistently!

I don't know whether it has just been a coincidence, but in relation to the advice put forward by Wyatt_Earp about the bad connection, since I unplugged and plugged the mouse back in a few times, the freeze-ups are practically non-existent. In fact I haven't had one in two whole days. It's like I have made good a bad connection between the contact points on the PS/2 socket on the PC and the mouse connector pins.

It may be the same idea as when you are having trouble with your mobile phone and clean the battery contacts, or a VCR remote control, when you give the batteries a twirl. I've even seen it happen with a smoke alarm.

Thanks to all who assisted me. It is much appreciated.
