Win XP Pro. Dell machine. I deleted several anti spyware, track eraser tools using Revo Uninstaller, rebooted and get the welcome screen, mouse freezes and can't use wired keyboard, can't type using any keys.

Swapped out keyboard and mouse, no luck. Tried using wireless, can't type using that also. Tried safe mode, get to Admin password prompt, can't use any of the keyboards.

Tried using a repair Cd, etc. changed boot sequence and windows boots to the log in screen.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Get a PS/2 keyboard [try to borrow one for a few minutes if neccessary]
Boot the unit like you are going to safe mode.
When you get to the screen with startup options use the arrow key to hilite Last known good configuration & press Enter.

Get the previously mentioned PS/2 KB .
Use it to enter the BIOS setup
Locate any listings for USB or USB keyboard/mouse & make sure they are enabled.
If that is not the problem then it sounds like the USB ports have simply failed.
Coinciding with software removal would probably be a coincidence .

I'll try that when I get home. If that does not work, any other ideas??

I can get things working if I could boot from my cd drive using a repair, chkdsk program..

Not trying to be a smart alec but if the USB doesn't work get a PS/2 KB & mouse.

Once you get to a Windows desktop try a usb device in each usb port [flash drive will do] .
If NO USB ports work, front or rear, that is a indication the Sothbridge chip on the motherboard is failing.

[The front USB ports attach to pins on the motherboard so if they don't work it's not just a rear connector thing]

The USB shouls work to allow you to get in the BIOS.
If you get in the BIOS & the USB & USB support isn't disabled fixing Windoes won't fix it.

    Go in the BIOS
Locate the Boot device priority or list
Set it to boot from the CD drive first
Exit t5he BIOS saving the changes .

    Boot the CD.

If you can get into the BIOS, check that caps locks is not turned on. This will freeze the mouse and make the keyboard inoperable when windows starts.

I can get into the BIOS and USB Is enabled. can change the boot sequence but computer still boots to the hard disk/welcome screen.

Not sure what a ps/2 kb and mouse is? where do I find them?

If you dp have it set to boot from the CD forst either there is something wrong with the disk or the cd drive.
The usual problem is the memtest isp file is burned to a disk as a data file, not "burn image to disk" .

A PS/2 Keyboard & mouse have the little round connectors onstead of USB.
You can get them most anywhere , like a walmart.

How did you get in to the bios ?

When I reboot, the keyboard lights will blink, mouse can be moved. the welcome page loads and then when it gets to the place for me to type my password, mouse and KB freezes. That's the two different wired ones and one wireless.

I can get to safe mode but when asked for PW, everything freezes. I can get to BOIS and make changes. when I reboot get to PW prompt, everything freezes.

Ok, I had thought that somewhere along the line you said the KB wouldn't work to get in the BIOS.

I see that in your first post you said,

"Tried using a repair Cd, etc. changed boot sequence and windows boots to the log in screen."

Either you aren't getting the boot order set right, you aren't saving the changes when you exit the BIOS , or the CD drive is bad.

At this point you need to get it to boot a CD or it probably isn't going to get fixed.

I'm saving my changes each time I tried which was several times. I've swapped out the cd drive from a machine I know works and still no luck.

Getting 2 bad drives in a row is unlikely but not unheard of.
A drive can seem to work just fine in Windows but not be able to boot a disk.

I suggest you try booting the disk in another computer to see if it works.
It won't hurt it to start booting as long as you don't do anything
If the disk boots just eject it from the drive.
If you tried 2 drives & neither boots the disk it is time to make sure the disk is even bootable.

I'll attempt to boot the cd from another computer. any chance I can use a flash drive to do a repair, chkdsk, etc? Not sure if that is possible and if so how to do it..

"any chance I can use a flash drive to do a repair"

    Too complicated.
You would need every file from a bootable XP Pro disk on the flash drive & the computer set to boot from USB first.
Not all computers can boot a flash drive.

understand, just grasping at straws now, will try the cd in another computer but I have a feeling it'll work. sounds like I'm out of options. may need to buy a new HD and start over on the machine.

Buying a new hatd drive would be a waste of $ if you can't boot the XP disk to install XP on it.

Have you tried booting the disk in a different unit to see if it works ?

What model Dell is it ?

I want to download the manual so I can look at the BIOS info .

I don't have the info infront of me at work but will bring model and service tag in to work tomorrow.

I know the disk works as I've used it and other cd's in the other machine.

Did you check what I posted on page 1?
check that caps locks is not turned on. This will freeze the mouse and make the keyboard inoperable when windows starts. This is something that needs to be searched for in the BIOS. I've had a computer freeze on me, exactly as what you are experiencing and the cause was that it booted up with caps lock enabled.
All I saw was that you checked USB was enabled.

The fact that the keyboard and mouse works enabling you to access the BIOS, tells me it is not a problem with your USB or PS/2 ports.

I did check that caps lock was off, actually I can't engage the caps lock or any of the keys w/ in seconds of the windows screen showing up.
