Mouse/keyboard issues

Well, I'm finally starting a thread about this in hopes that I can figure out a solution BESIDES replacing my motherboard (which I'm guessing is the issue).

    Specs:

    PSU: Corsair 1000W power supply
    CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
    MB: GA-K8N-SLI
    GPU: Nvidia GTX 465
    Sound card: HT Omega CLARO
I have a PCI USB hub card (4 USB 2.0 ports) installed
    Logitech LX710 wireless laser mouse/keyboard

The issue: My mouse and keyboard, more often than not, behave erratically. For instance, sometimes some keys won't work while others will, sometimes a key repeats itself half a dozen times with one stroke. Mouse sometimes won't track on black mousepad, but during those times, it will track on the oak color of the desk. It will jump from one point on the screen to another sometimes. Sometimes right or left clicking will act as if I'm holding the button down (dragging), or won't register at all (takes several clicks to "click").

    What I've tried thus far:

Thoroughly cleaning the mouse/keyboard and replacing the batteries with BRAND NEW alkalines

Removing all possible dust from inside the desktop case, checked all connections

Malware read and run me first steps for malware removal

    Updating the Logitech software

    Using a different USB port

Using a different Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse combo (bought it at the store, had identical issues, returned it and hooked up my original set)

Formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows and everything else (it was even having issues during the Windows installation with both of my external drives disconnected, etc... obviously no way malware was present at all)

I've been using this keyboard/mouse combo for awhile now with no issues until a few weeks ago. I can't wrap my head around what the issue could possibly be, except the motherboard, and I only say that, because after I installed the (new) power supply and graphics card, I had to wiggle the ethernet cord in the connection in order for the onboard ethernet adapter to turn on (green light illuminate)...

I'm at my wits end with this...

What gets me, is everything else plugged in via USB works great -- both my external hard drives, my external USB hub, card reader, thumbdrives, etc.

    Hi

Was going to say with adding a new GPU that it was a power issue, until I noticed the 1000W PSU you have, thoughts I have and they are random

    1. Any yellow ! marks in device manager at all?
    2. Unplug all your other USB devices and just have the KB and Mouse plugged in.
    3. In Device Manager open up the Universial Serial Bus Controllers branch and you will have to double click each listing for Generic USB Hubs or USB Root Hub (can forget the controllers) then the Power tab and look for a listing of your Keyboard in the attached devices box, then right click and uninstall that USB Hub, then look for any others with same listing, if none left shutdown not reboot your PC, then reboot and Windows will re-install the driver, just could be a rogue driver install, while looks like it works ok, it may not.

Okay... yeah, I have yellow marks.

I tried uninstalling the mouse/keyboard USB drivers, but couldn't reboot without a hard button (no way to navigate the computer!)... so I simply unplugged and replugged in the combo's USB plug and let it reinstall (without rebooting).

It installed three drivers but has an unknown USB device, apparently, that it won't install for.

I'm not quite sure how to deal with that issue?

This is the third (at least) time installing the drivers, since I already reinstalled Windows and it did it then as well.

I have "unrecognized USB device" balloon popup on the task bar every once in awhile, too.

Strangest thing... when my (Comodo) virus scanner is scanning, they work PERFECTLY.

I haven't unplugged all of my other USB peripherals yet... I'll do more troubleshooting when I get the time, but I still don't understand why it won't install the fourth driver.

I've tried plugging it into the PCI USB hub card as well, same issue and I can't use the keyboard to enter BIOS, etc. when I do that (I currently have it plugged into a direct USB connection to the motherboard).

At this very second in time, the keyboard and mouse APPEAR to be working normally...

    What I've done so far:

Removed ALL other USB devices from the computer (except the keyboard/mouse receiver).

Uninstalled the USB driver for the keyboard/mouse (in Device Manager)
    Shutdown the computer
    Booted the computer up
THREE devices installed -- USB Composite Device and two USB Input Devices (makes sense)

The backspace key didn't want to work for a second just now... it seems I probably haven't seen the end of this mess.

    EDIT: Still having issues.

I've reconnected all the other USB devices, and Device Manager has no yellow marks... but mouse/keyboard are still malfunctioning.

I went into BIOS and changed USB from "1.1 + 2.0" to "1.1". I remember I had changed that a few weeks ago (I had always had issues before using USB 2.0 on this motherboard).

No effect... still having the same issues.

    I'm stuck.

    Hi

    What Windows version BTW?

Do you have the USB dongle for the KB amd Mouse combo in the back motherboards USB ports and plug the dongle in direct and not via that extention holder thing they have? if not try that then reset the reciever (dongle ) first, then quickly press the other two devices red connect buttons.

Puzzeling now as you have no yellow ! marks and all other devices work ok, dont know if you have a different brand of KB and Mouse to test or a friend has one you can borrow to test (a Microsoft one maybe)?

    Hi Halo

    Windows 7 x64 is installed (before I reinstalled, I was using Windows 7 x32).

I've tried the dongle without the extension with no change (and just tried it again to confirm).

I've tried resetting the connections with the buttons NUMEROUS times.

I did try a different Logitech keyboard/mouse combo new from the store with the same issues (thus returned it to the store). I don't have other keyboards/mice to test, though I ordered a USB wired keyboard (Kensington) and a Microsoft wireless mouse from Newegg (for another computer). Links:

The keyboard/mouse worked fine for many months with my previous installation of Windows (7 x32).

I just purchased an identical motherboard from eBay, that's the last thing I can even think of. In the midst of my graphics card switches, I can only guess that I somehow damaged the MB.

    Hi mcsmc

It may have done but, somehow I'm more thinking a a conflict somewhere, trouble is trying to find out where!

Ended up looking for any info possble and even HERE says you should be fine and in x64 you should not even need to Logitech software, so maybe an uninstall of is it "setpoint" the software and drivers if I remember correctly. Then reboot and see if Windows installs its driver.

Try installing if you have not already these libraries (with x64 OS you need at times both x64 and x86)

    Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86)
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x64)

    Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 Final

Hi Halo, thanks for the tips.

    I'm currently installing those packages.

What baffles me is, things worked fine UNTIL I was switching out the graphics cards, then issues arose on the Windows 7 x32 installation... but again, it's not just within Windows!

The keyboard has the same issues when accessing BIOS settings (i.e. arrow keys, F10, etc.). This is what leads me to believe it's hardware related.

Well, I haven't ordered that keyboard and mouse yet.

However, I went to the local store and purchased a Logitech Classic Keyboard 200 (corded USB) and a Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 3000 (small laser mouse), and both are working flawlessly.

I have the malfunctioning keyboard/mouse hooked up to another computer, and they are working on IT (old Gateway computer, Windows XP MCE SP3) just fine, EXCEPT the mouse:

Tracks on different things at different times. It wouldn't track AT ALL on the black mouse pad or the table (light wood color), but would track on my black ballcap bill. Then, it would track on the mouse pad but not the table, and THEN it would track on the table but not the mouse pad... ?!

Key functions stick (I'm still talking about the mouse) SOMETIMES, but I think this is due to a worn out/abused actuator (this mouse usually becomes airborne during arguments and etc., and it's been getting clicked pretty HARD throughout this whole time it hasn't been working, since obviously pushing on something harder and more violently makes it work better... lol).

So I don't know what gives... it's obviously not a wireless interference issue (not that I can think of anything else around here that operates on 27 MHz).

I'm still thinking it was the motherboard, but now I'm in trouble for forking out $50 for a "new" motherboard I'll be replacing within 6 months, when a $13 keyboard works... ugh.

    Hi

Thats a weird thing in that a new MSFT mouse and a Logitech USB KB work ok, they would be connected similar through USB as the other KB and Mouse are, plus on a different PC the KB and Mouse work!
