I am trying to optimize my mothers computer (sony VAIO). One of the problems it has is that the mouse will only doubleclick, which if you can imagine can be very inhibiting. I have gone through the malware procedure, so that rules that out. I have checked the properties of the mouse and it has the left-click set at click, which should be correct. Still no luck. What is interesting is that the "test click" area in properties (XP) seems to recognize the difference between a click and a double click, as it only verifies my doubleclick when I actually doubleclick. Anyone have any ideas about what could be done to fix this?

Also, another issue I am having is that the speakers do not make any noise. I can plug headphones in and hear, but the speakers do not work no matter how high I set the volume. I have already updated the drivers for the soundcard, so this makes me believe they must be physically broken. Any ideas on this? Thanks ahead of time.

yes, it automatically doubleclicks in all other applications. I have not tried another mouse, but I will do that. I don't have the option of plugging it in to another PC, however, since it is the built-in touchpad on the laptop (which is ultimately what I'd prefer to use.) Can't get the latest driver to take. It won't let me uninstall the old driver. In properties it shows the old driver is "working properly" and the new driver gives me an error message. I'm guessing this is because it won't load both drivers at the same time. I went through the driver installation application but it didn't seem to change anything. Running out of ideas.

Whats the error message you get when you try to update the driver for the touchpad?
Does the LT have an external ps2/usb that you can use another mouse on?
What model of vaio is the LT?

The error message is "error 10". I have USB ports that a mouse can be connected to. The model is VGN-A270.
