good morning, hope i'm in the right place here; have just got an HP laptop, running XP and the mouse pointer seems to make the page scroll up or down randomly. I have been into the pointer application on the comp but cannot see anything that may fix this. I have looked at the other pointer threads but it is not the same as those - i don't think.
Any suggestions gratefully accepted, it's a darn nuisance.

Are you actually using a mouse, or are you using the touchpad?

If you are using a mouse, be sure the touchpad is off. Your wrist moving over the touchpad can cause the mouse cursor to move all over the place.

does your touchpad have the special bars on the bottom/side for scrolling? The make/model of your laptop would help us.

    Sorry, of course - it's an hp 6730b C2D P8400 2.26G 2GB 160G - reading off the invoice.
And no, no special bars for scrolling.

I had the same problem I have a hp dv 2000 series and the problem occurred hen i tried to clean the touch pad. apparently i put too much pressure on the pad while cleaning it. My resolution was to gently re seat the pad by gently i mean i took the screws out out the case giving it breathing room then putting the screws back in (i never removed the case just took the pressure off) rebooted and it was fine. What worked for me may not work for you but that was my solution (primitive or not) it worked for me. Hang on someone should have a better solution for this issue.

That's hard to believe. I have a Compaq Presario Notebook PC which cost about half what I see the HP Compaq 6730b shown here, and my notebook's touchpad does have a scroll bar area along the right and bottom edges.

Nevertheless, my suggestion is, get a mouse. I use a USB notebook mouse with my notebook PC and I love it.

I suspect that you're bumping either the touchpad or the center scroll button by mistake. Try to look at how your fingers are positioned next time you notice the problem. If it is the touchpad that is being bumped- adjust your hand position or turn down the sensitivity in the pointers options.

:-o umm, sorry but there is what must be a scroll bar thingy down the side of the touch pad.
So as you now know, i am not very computer savvy, and i should/will find out more about what this machine does...
I did use a usb mouse with my last laptop and i will go back to that anyway i think; my hand positioning is obviously making making the scoll thingy work.
Thank you all very, very much for taking the time to help.

Find out what key combination turns off the touchpad when a mouse is attached or the cursor will still move all over as you type.

I find touchpads somewhat frustrating. They are too sensitive for my liking. I used the touchpad on my notebook for a spell but I find using a mouse less stressful.

As plodr said, you'll want to disable the touchpad once you connect a mouse. On my Compaq notebook, there's a little button on the top edge of the touchpad. Pressing it disables the touchpad. When the touchpad is disabled, a small blue LED indicator to the left of the button changes to red.

Thanks again very much everyone; have disabled touchpad and am using my trusty usb mouse.

May good fortune follow you all, and the the wind behind you always be your own...
