Mouse With A Mind Of It's Own

I have started having problems with my wireless mouse on my PC. I have Win7 and have ran all virus programs I have. I have ran Super anti spyware and my paid version of Malware bytes which neither found anything. I do try to stay away from anything that might look bad or if I don't know the site.
When using the mouse sometimes it seems to have a mind of it's own and I have to look for the cursor because it has decided to go somewhere else on the page. I have changed the battery in it, so if someone has any idea of what is going on please let me know.

Make sure there is not a dog hair, eyelash or dust bunny in the optical cavity. I keep a can of dusting gas handy just for that reason.

You should try another mouse too - to see if it happens with it. If it does, the problem is not with your mouse.

As a side note, I have two 24" monitors and I sometimes lose my mouse pointer too. So if you go to the Mouse Properties page and check "Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key", it makes it easy to find again.

Try a wired mouse to see if the problem persists and also try changing the battery in the wireless mouse it could be dying.

Note the OP already did that. Another mouse was already suggested too - though not wired. But that would not matter.

Mouse works fine on other computers, I also tried a wired mouse and it also does the same thing. This problem started 48 hours after a Windows update. Has Windows sent out a bad update?

do you know which update you did?

I'd assume that if the update was the problem it would happen sooner than 2 days after the update.

March's updates came out yesterday, Tuesday the 12th. What sort of "update" are you referring to?

What are your Win 7 update settings set to?
I have mine turned off but when I was on auto update, I refused driver updates and I have "recommended updates" unchecked. In essence, I accepted only security updates.

Please check your update history and post what was updated around the time of the problem.

I also would assume it would happen to many users and I see no other reports of this.

Have you tried a different USB port pair?

I had updates on the 5th and the 12th. They were for Office 2010 products .Net Farmework 4.7.2, plus the security updates. It also installed the rollouts. I noticed that over the 2 days that it had gotten worse and is still is getting worse. I noticed that some of the updates do not show up as I remember that there were 8 updates on the 5th, and only 6 updates on the 12th.

I have moved the dongle to another USB port.
I purchased a new wired mouse and the problem is still there.

I hope this helps to find the problem. Thanks to all for your help with this.

I located the problem, it was the update KB4486546. Once it was removed everything is working properly. I wonder if it was a bad download or if it was corrupted.

Install it again and see if the problem returns. I note that update dealt with .NET Framework on W7 systems.

I cannot find where that update caused similar problems for other users so it could be something corrupt with .NET Framework itself. With that in mind, you might want to run the .NET Framework Repair Tool and see if your problem persists.

I note also that update was a "roll up". Typically a roll up is just a package that consolidates a bunch of previous updates that were already pushed out. Is your Windows 7 otherwise fully updated?

To that, understand mainstream support for W7 ended years ago and extended support ends in less than a year. It is time to bite the bullet.

I don't do rollups so I didn't install the NET quality rollup.
Last month I did 2 NET security updates. 4483483, Security only for NET 3.5.1
and on the only computer that has NET 4.5.2, I installed 4483474
so I didn't see the problem you describe.

Pretty sure if the rollup package sees an update is already installed, it skips installing it again. Either way, it should not hurt to reinstall it.

I also recently started having trouble with my wireless mouse on my desktop pc .Tried replacing batteries...no help. Tried switching with another wireless mouse i have . Problem persisted on desktop. Either mouse works fine on a laptop i have, but not on my desktop so the problem must be in my desktop.
I went to Walmart and bought a $6 USB port mouse and it works perfectly on the desktop. Cant figure out what is wrong with the wireless mice..both Logitech. Wondering if the problem is in my desktop hardware . Updated drivers ..no help. Mice arent new but not overly old either. Any ideas? Thanks.

I did run the repair tool and it did nothing to correct the problem, and no I will not bite the bullet because I like Win 7. To many of my programs won't work if I go to another operating system because it's license is tied to this PC.

I will reinstall it this weekend because I have to much work to do on it this week and I will report back.

All the mice I have used were Logitech and the problem was only on the desktop PC. Might be something along those lines with Logitech.

On Sunday night I tried the link you provided, then reinstalled the update. The problem returned so once again I removed the update and all is fine once more.
There has to be something in the update that is causing this problem. Tweaking .com repair could not find any problem and actually did nothing for my computer. I hope this fills in any gaps that I may have left out.

Thanks to all who has tried to help, but I am not going to get that update again.

KB4486546 is aPreview of Quality Rollup.
NEVER, EVER install previews!!! Basically you are a tester for the next month's updates. That was released in February to see how it needed to be tweaked for March. Apparently it hasn't been tweaked enough to actually work properly.

As far as March updates are concerned - don't install them yet.

    I watch this:
    https://www.askwoody.com/2019/new-bug-reported-with-all-of-this-months-windows-patches/
and until I see a new post about the problems being fixed, I hold off on doing the updates.

Thanks for the information and I will stop doing so. I have never had a problem in the past, but since you have explained to me what they are, I will never get another.

    Thanks for your help everyone.
