Few weeks ago the mousepad on my daughter's laptop stopped working. There is no icon at the bottom right and when I run find new hardware it does not show up on the list. Does that mean it is dead?

If you post the make and model of laptop, chances are that the manufacturer might have driver downloads for the touchpad.
Also there is usually a keyboard combination that enables and disables the touchpad.
Have a look in the registry too because the touchpad can be disabled from there also.

Then the last post in this thread http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=172471
says the touchpad doesn't work when the battery is in!!! Take the battery out and see if it works.

As plodr said, many laptops have a hotkey or hotkey combo that can enable and disable the touchpad; many laptops also have a button that can do this. It's usually a long narrow oval/bar right above the touchpad. Many people have these on their laptops and have no idea what it does, then one day they accidentally press it and turn off the touchpad and think they have a hardware problem LOL
