.mov files play incorrectly

    When I play .mov files the audio is very “chopped” - the best word I can think of - and seems to have an echo.

    I have tried using Quicktime and Quicktime Alternative. The problem is apparent in either.
    I haven't downloaded any extra codecs.

    What causes this and what can I do to overcome it?

    My O.S. is XP Home + SP2 + automatic critical updates.
