THere is quote from a movie or maybe a show that I cannot recall well, but it goes something like

I swear that brings to mind a conversation/situation/explanation in one of Asimov's Foundation books.

When the Empire is still dissolving but the Foundation is not yet in place.
A "scientist" uses this method for his research instead of actually doing any field work himself because the prior scientists have done all the ground work needed.
(I'm expressing this very badly.)

 

What kind of show/movie was it? Fantasy, sci-fi, dystopia, contemporary...?

 

I thought for a while it was Gil Grisssom From CSI vega

then I thought it was from the National Treasure series of movies

What I recall it was 2 men talking and it was a low action/cerebrum type show/movie, snd the guy who said the line was a book=worm tuype guy
and the one guy, who was already "labeled" in themovie by some past event, asked the good guy if he had already labeled him as everyone else had and the good guys says, something like

"I try to read all about a topic and reach my own conclusion"

after I woke up, I had to get my new iapple password

I recall that . . . I think it was in the first book of the original trilogy. An official from the Empire was visiting the "Encyclopedia" Foundation and was an amateur archaeologist. He spoke of reading the works by the great scientists of the past, and he would weigh one against the other. He was asked why he didn't go to the digs himself and form his own opinion, and he responded as you stated. The protagonist saw this as a symptom of the stagnation and decay of the Empire.
