I recently installed mozilla firefox on my computer (a windows XP machine). While i like the higher efficiency, security, and new features, I've found that it wont load some of the pages my old browser would (internet explorer). Now some of these pages i've found can be easily corrected by installing media players like Shockwave (even though they were installed on IE), but others (for instance the UPDATE WINDOWS page from microsoft) dont open, and i don't know why. I've discovered that there are a number of extensions (http://texturizer.net/firefox/extensions/) firefox need to...well...function. Can anyone tell me which i need?

Its probably easier to just open it in IE instead. Thats what I've always done.

Here's an extension called IE View:
    http://update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&id=35&vid=145

After installing a 'Open link target in IE' item will be available in your right-click context menu.
Really? I just get a blank white page when I try it :(

BTW, love the Janet Reno avatar :D:D

Aha! I was just typing it into the address bar cuz when I imported my favorites the WU ones were nowhere to be found

What happens when you try to search the MSKB?
    I get redirected to support.microsoft.com
I can access specific articles, but even then the 'Search' option in the articles is not there...

Nevermind, I just fingered it out.

    I haven't used a non-IE based browser in awhile :p

I'm still learning this thing, but it's very cool

There are a number OS sites that are designed around IE only.

Anything that uses ActiveX components will only work in IE (there's a plug-in for FF, but it's a security flaw). A number of MS sites will only function with MSIE. Windows Update in particular. However, you should use MSIE when updating Windows anyways. MSIE is basically the update feature for Windows in that situation. No reason to use a client whose behavior MS won't be expecting. MS also has a number of non-W3C standards in MSIE -- generally CSS standards. DHTML sites that use those properties will not work on occasion. I'm also not certain how non-MSIE browsers deal with VBScript, which MSIE will run just fine. MSIE even has sone standard that purposefully work differently than W3C standard, just to force people to use MSIE to browse cerain sites. Artifacts of the old Netscape/MSIE browser war.

There is a plug-in, View in IE or IEView, that allows you to right-click a page in FF and open it directly into MSIE. Very useful for thos erandom pages maintained by people who don't care about Mac and *nix users.

I can't open the web site to my bank with Mozilla.

Kodo, what you said was right. Damn, microsoft are a bunch of greedy bastards.
Da Chicken, thank you very much.

Now how about this: When i go to play Yahoo games, it opens up Java, but everything looks a little off. Round lines look more square, words are smaller than they should be (not text, so don't tell me to increase text size by hitting "Ctrl +"). What to do?

First guess: MSIE is using the MSJVM, whereas FF will use Sun's JRE.

Yahoo is one of the worst offenders for using MS-only crap. Only MSN is worse IMX.

Da Chicken, you are right yet again.

This will likely be my last question. I run spyware blaster on my computer. It has a section that is intended to provide extra security to Firefox users. But when i attempt to activate that feature it tells me "There are no Mozilla/Firefox profileson your computer (for this account)"

    wtf?

OK, found it: Disabled all protection, uninstalled version 3.1 and installed version 3.2 then reenabled all protection.

make IE your default browser again and then set FF to your default again without using SETBROWSER program.

that's very bizzare.. if you're connecting to local host then I would check your hosts file. Your favorites should be there. The program had nothing to do with modifying any files at all... just reg entry for default browser location.

I assume you are still using Win2k.

There is a file in here called hosts.

You could conversely just remove the contents too.

Run CCleaner. If you don't have it, download it from http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads12.html Install it, run it, reboot, & go from there.

Kodo & Lugztaz - I would uninstall both Firefox and MyIE2, run CCleaner, Defrag, & run a reg optomizer, reboot, make sure IE is working OK, reinstall Firefox, download proper extensions, & see how it goes from there. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Don't know if this have been covered, but I have experienced several times that the Firefox-Profile can become corrupted. (Especially when frequently upgrading to new versions of Firefox combined with installing all kind of extensions)

The Firefox-Profile includes among other things:
    1. All your tweaks and settings made in about:config
    2. All your extensions
    3. All your themes
    4. All your bookmarks (Make sure to export)

    To create a new Firefox-Profile
    1. Close down Firefox (Also check your task manager for any firefox.exe processes)
    2. In your Start-menu find the item "Mozilla Firefox" and select "Profile Manager"
    3. The Profile Manager will start and present the current Firefox-Profiles in your system.
    4. Press "Create Profile..." and press "Next" change the Profile-Name and "Finish" should be ungreyed
    5. Double-click the newly created profile and it will start Firefox using that profile.
    6. Test if the problem is gone

    To reset the Firefox-Profiles
    1. Close down Firefox (Also check your task manager for any firefox.exe processes)
    2. In your Start-menu find the item "Mozilla Firefox" and select "Profile Manager"
    3. The Profile Manager will start and present the current Firefox-Profiles in your system.
    4. Select each profile and press "Delete Profile..." and confirm to delete the files
    5. Press "Create Profile..." and press "Next" and press "Finish"
    6. Double-click the newly created profile and it will start Firefox using that profile.
    7. Test if the problem is gone

Have also experienced when messing around with Firefox, then it is not enough to reinstall Firefox on top of the existing install, and even when uninstalling Firefox some folders are still left around.

To make a clean reinstall of Firefox (Will loose profiles)
    1. Close down Firefox (Also check your task manager for any firefox.exe processes)
    2. Open "Control Panel" and use Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Mozilla Firefox (Answer yes to delete the install folder)
    3. Go to your Windows-Account folder usually: "C:\Documents and Settings\<YourLoginName>"
    4. Open "Application Data" (Hidden folder so make sure "Folder Options..." have been set to "Show hidden files and folders" and NOT to "Hide protected operating system files")
    5. Delete the "Mozilla" folder.
    6. Install Firefox 0.9.2 (Or whatever that is the lastest)

Though if you don't feel comftable about messing around with your system, then I would just use Internet Explorer and wait for Firefox to become better at recovering from problems.
