Can never have your cake and eat it, if you go open source then you takes your risk, closed source is at least a bit more of a line drawn in the sand.

They left the code Open so as its name professes and they in the Mozilla corp did profess to advertise that we are for the people and dont hide anything, but now they want to stop others from adding, to me thats not open source... you eitehr have it open or not, cannot have both, we know that Apple and Microsoft are closed and they make no bones about it.

I also have to say that in defence of the likes of Apple and MSFT, Mozilla or their fanbase do add the damn annoying popups to websites for IE and other browser users to jump to Fx....

Now that Fx is becoming a market share my old thought that they will think of $$$$$$$$$$ over users is coming true, they will jump at some point to F the user its $$s we are after now, the lure is too great.

Is the bubble about to burst.... hope not as I like them as a company and think their docterine is a good one, but this type of blog post will not help them with the educated users who can read or see through the words.

Aside from the open source issue from a consumer perspective alone I believe there needs to be more to protect the consumer from unscrupulous software vendors.Other than regular consumer law AFAIK there's little to protect us from the all powerful 'terms of use' or 'software license agreement' documents we all sign when using a new piece of software, they have carte blanche to do as they wish.I've looked quite a bit for any kind of consumer protection where software is concerned and I can't find any, everything relates to copyright protection.

It's your computer why should the software you have on your computer have anything to do with another software company unless they will cause incompatibility? It shouldn't matter if its open source or not,it's nothing to do with them unless they ask our permission so it shouldn't be Mozilla that fumes it should be us they've installed plugins without asking.

I would like to see more that protects us as software dominance competitions highten,if anyone knows of any kind of documentation that sets rules for what software companies can and can't put into terms of use I'd love to read it,I'm far from a software expert so I hope it does exist.

    :-D

How does Firefox make money? Old post on the web below.

Of course we know about the above since Firefox's homepage is also Google with its search engine. I've got to wonder about their built-in anti-phishing (sp?) if that comes from Google as well.

I do agree that if we download some software and a plugin wants to install that we should be notified by the offenders prior to installation and be able to say no, thank you very much. :-D I've so many plugins that crept in without my knowledge and they can't be removed, just disabled. :***

Now this website is for Rikky and others who want more consumer power, ($$): http://www.fsf.org/ ,

PS: I'm using Ixquick as my homepage (search engine) on all 3 browsers. Use only Google when I really need to.

The point is that there are rules that apply to open source apps as well as closed source apps. The plug-ins (apparently) violated the terms of the "open source rules" also known as the GPL (at least I'm pretty sure of this :-o if I'm wrong, I have no problem admitting it and being corrected), and this is why Mozilla is PO'd.

I'm not sure who originally posted this, but it VERY clearly illustrates why Mozilla is upset....
End users should ALWAYS be notified and be fully aware what plug-ins are going to be installed at any given time. IMO, this should apply to open-source/GPL software as well as closed-source/"private" software. When a secretive plug-in installs itself in to IE, we call it "adware" or "spyware". Why would secretive plug-ins for FF be any different?

From what I see what's in plugins in FF, it's mostly "surprise" rolleyes Microsoft who seems to be the winner in amounts of *not asked for* plug ins!! Yeah, I was the one who originally posted:
Bet that Mozilla FF gets a lot of similar complaints from their users.

Yes, co's prior to installing any plugins, should at least give the user the option to install or not by advising them of their intention. Fully agree with you dlb! Courtesy has about flown out of the window.

@ digitalocksmith: Just to let you know that I wasn't born yesterday and vividly remember the days when businesses were a bit more civil to their customers because they wanted to keep them. :) Avarice has overtaken imo.
